Be it known U that L ED ARD ii. WILLIAMS. a. citizen of the-United States, residing st New Orleans, in the county of Urleans and State of Louisiana, have-invented certein new and useful improvements in Savings Safety-Bones, of which the following is e specification.

In said drawings the part marked ri represents broadly the sate-deposit box and B a separate and removable box in which the main lock C is carried.

The box A comprises a body portion having a lid 11 hinged to one side thereof. A partition 12 divides the portion 10 into a large compertment13 adapted to receive the articles for safe keeping and a smaller compartment 14 in which the box 13 is l0-- ceted. The said box B is likewise composed of a body portion 15 having hinged lid 16 adapted tobe secured in its closed position by clock 17 as shown in Fig. 3. A coin chute 18 is secured within the portion 15 and opens through the top of the portion 15 where it communicates with a similar opening 19 formed in the lid 11 and through I an improve,

member :28 which is pivoted on it short shaft similar to the pivot 21. The opposite end of the member :29 is located adjacent the inner end of the chute 18 and is grooved to receive and temporarily retain the coin as described later. Below the pivot 21 the pawl is curved to one side as at 30 and has one arm 31 of bell-crank lever 32 resting upon it. The arm 33 of the bell crzink lever lies in the path of movement of the grooved portion of the rocking member 28 for e pupose to be explained later. In order to prevent an unauthorized person from opening the look, I provide a safety pawl 3% which swings freely upon a pivot 35 and which is provided at its upper end with a projection 36 which normally lies just out of the path of movement of u projecting segment 37 formed on the rocking member 28,:idjacent the lug 27, but which swings into the path of movement of the segment 37 when the box is tilted slightly. A leaf spring 38 bears against the portion 30 of the pawl 20 to normally hold the pawl in its locked position;

The entire box B is held in position by forming a linger 39 upon the cover member l l which linger 39 engages Within a slot formed in the partition wall 12. A U- shupcd latch member 40 is pivoted at one end to the partition 12 and covers the upper edge of the partition 12 resting upon the finger As shown at Fig; l, the latch member +10 is of such length that with the beep 25 engaged in the look by the bolt 23 any attempt to raise the box 13 out of the compartment would necessarily lift the end of the latch 10 which is not pivoted. This lifting of the latch would cause such latch to engage against the cover member 11 and prevent the furtherlitting of any of the parts. As shown particularly at Fig. 3 the cover member 11 bears directly upon the top of the latch 40 whereby any movement is prevented by reason of the parts being pivoted to the partition 12 which is rigid and stationary in the box A.

The operation of unlocking the box A is as follows: A coin having been deposited in the opening 19, passes down the chute 18 and falls into the grooved portion of the member 28 lowering this end of the member 28 until it rests. upon the lever 33 thereby causing the lug 2? to out of the path of movement of the shoulder 25% A l of suitable form is then turned to beer casing comprising a pivoted-pawl havinga against the edge -ofthe pawl 20 and move it laterally against the tension of the spring 38. Thls lateral movement causes the end 30 of the pawl 20 to swing downward thereby rocking the lever 32 which allows the member .28 to lower and deposit the coin .into the box B. By leaving the key in the position of holding the pawl 20 in its unlocked iposition, the reverse operation may be per 0 the ke is turned beyond the position of unlocking the box,'it will be necessary todeposit. another coin inorder to release the pawl 20.

Having thus fully described mysaid invention, what I claim as new and, desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz' 1. Astute-deposit box ha'vin a hinged lid, a partition within said box ioi'min coinpartments therein, a casing within t he box having a hinged lid located in one ,of said compartments, means for lockin'gth lid at said inner casing, and means carried w thinhook at its upper end, a staple depending from the lid-of said outer casing and passing into said inner casing and adapted to c -act with said hook, means for holding said pawl in its locked position,-a'nd a safety' pawlto prevent accidental opening of said lock,- substantially as set forth.

7. A safe deposit box provided with a lid,
