Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 5, 1919. SerialNo. 287,851.
To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that I, FRANK Donorrnx, a citizen of Czechoslovakia, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grocerymens Boxes, of which the following is a specification. I The primary object of the invention is to provide means adapted for household use by which the goods left at a house door by a vender will be safe against theft until re-- moved by the housekeeper.- 3 j A further object of the invention is the provision of holding means for groceries and the like adapted for mounting upon'a convenient support such as a doorpost of a house and wherein articles such as groceries and milk may be deposited, the device being automaticallylocked upon closing the same and unlocked when the ownerremoves the locks therefrom.
With these general objects in view, the invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like reference charac ters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken. upon line III-J11 of Fi 2,
* ig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the I my invention broadly includes a casing in the form of a box 10 having an opening 11 in the front thereof adapted to admit. such articles as groceries and bottles of milk, while a hinged door 12 is provided for the opening 11. The door is normally maintained open by. a latch mechanism hereinafter described adapted to be released by a sliding pin 13 at one end of the box 10, an
oppositely positioned locking bolt 14 being provided for the door. A hinged door 15 Patented Aug. 3 19 20.
in the top 16 of thebox 10 is normally locked I closed by a padlock 17. I Astaple 18 upon the rearedgeof the door 12 is provided with-a pivoted bar 19 slidable upon a guard 20 carried by a plate 21 upon the inner face of the front wall 22 of the 1 box with a spring 23 extending through a hinges 25.
inner end of theaforementioned pin-13. A
leaf spring 29 normally holds" the inner end of the pin 13 against the adjacent end of s thejlever 28 while a similar spri'ng30 bearing upon the latch 26 normally maintains the latch engaging the upper face of the bar 19 slot 24 of the said bar adapted for swinging A pivoted latch 26 upon the plate 21 is connected by means'ofa link 2'1"- with a'lever 28 also pivoted upon the plate2l with one, end of said lever constan'tly engaged by the and projected within a notch 31' in the upper i face of the bar when the door 12is open as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. It will be apparent that upon forcing the pin 6 13 inwardly, the latch 26 will be released from the notch 31 and permitting the spring 23 to swing the door 12 to its closed position.
' A platform or false bottom 32 is positioned within the box 10 beneath the level of the front entrance opening 11, the same being resiliently mounted upon a plurality of springs 33 extending longitudinally and secured as at 34 to the bottom 35 of the box.
The springs 33 normally maintain the platform 32 horizontally positioned engaging beneath opposite cleats 36 upon theend walls 37 of the box, while an anti-friction roller 38 is journaled in each end of the platform 32 adjacent said end walls. 1
The locking bolt 14 for the door 12 is slidably mounted in a guide plate 39 carried by the front wall 22 of the box at'the opposite side of the opening-11 from the latch 26.
- The bolt 14 is adapted to be projected into a keeper socket 40 provided in the free end of the door 12, the bolt being normally held retracted when the-box 10 is empty in the manner hereinafter set forth.
spring 44 having one end. anchored as at 45 in the rear end of the slotand with the other end of the spring 44 attached to a lug 46 upon the detent 41. The said detent is nora of the platform 32 by means of saidspring opening 11 so that upon releasing the latch 26by inwardly pressing thepin 13, the door 14. An angular slot 17 communicates with the slot 13 and extends to an upright slot48 in the front Wall 22. A lever 49 in the slot a7 is pivoted at 50 to the bottom and con nected by a wire rod 51 with a lug 52 upon; the end face of the detent 11 'An angular rocker 53 is pivoted at 5 1 in;the slo tyi8 with y the upper end of the rocker operatively en gaging within aside-notch 55 ofthe bolt 14.
An angular arm 56 .pivotedin the slot 4:7 is
pivotally connected by a link '57 with the adjacent :end of the lever 49Landwith the lowerqadjacent end of the rocker 53 by means of a pivoting link 58. i
From this detailed description of the -n1echanis1n, it will be apparent that upon placlng a package suchas 59 upon the platform 32 through the opening 11 the b0lt14= will be automatically projected into the ill-be automatically closed by the spring 23 engagingthe bolt 14: Withinthe keeper meniber heretofore noted. iThe owner of the b02510 such as ahousewife, vmay then release thelock 1K and remove; the package 59 Wherenpon the springs 33 will automatically 7 elevate. the platform to its normal position While lthespring 44 will retract the bolt 14:
removed by the;;;oWner upon releasing the padlock 17.
What I claim as newis Adevice of the class described comprising a box having a forwarddentrance opening,
a door for the entrance 1opening,=- a barslidably mounted Within the box having a link connection at onset itsends withisaid door, ten sioned: means associated 'With the (other end of said bar for normally holdingfithe door in :its closed position, a tensioned bell flcrank lever pivoted withinisaid box adapted to engage thesliding bar to hold the same proj ected against the tension of .the resilient means connectedlto said-bar With the door in its OPGIkPOSltlQIl and ,manuallyoperable means for said rbell icrank 'lever to release the samecfirom said; bar to permit the: bar tensioning a means to. operatesaid a bar and 1 close @the; door.
