AUTOMATICALLY-OPERATED FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
Application filed February 16, 1920. Serial No. 358,943.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARLINGTON CHARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Covington, in the county of Tipton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatically Operated Fire Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in automatically operated fire extinguishers.
An important object of the invention is to provide a fire extinguisher of the fusible link type which is positive in operation and dependable.
A further object is to provide a fire extinguisher of the above character which is readily assembled and readily reset after use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent throughout the course of the followin description.
11 the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken through an apparatus embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spring detent and its attached parts.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the receptacle for one of the fluids used in the apparatus, and
Fi 6 is a perspective view of the holding on for the receptacle shown in Fig. 5.
eferring now more particular y to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a suitable casin having its upper end closed by a removab e cap 11; The bottom of the cas-v ing 10 or the side wall thereof adjacent to the bottom is provided with an outlet 12 which communicates with a conduit 13 provided upon its upper end with a spray pipe 14 of any desired type.
Secured to the casing 10 interiorly thereof and adjacent its upper end is a bracket 15, to which is pivotall connected as at 16 a holding cup 17 ounted in the holding cup 17 is a receptacle 18 provided adjacent its up or end with a lip 19.
Shdably mounted in the wall of the casmg 10 is a detent 20 which is adapted to engage with its inner end the under face of the lip 19, holding the receptacle 18 in a vertical position as shown in Fig. 1.
Secured to the outer surface of the casing is a suitable support 21 to which is pivotally connected a lever 22 preferably of the bell crank order. To the end of one arm of the lever 22, the outer end of the detent 20 is pivotally connected as at 23. The spring 24 is provided surrounding the detent 20 exteriorly of the casing and engaging against the outer surface of the casing and the lever 22. It will be seen that the spring 24 which is of the compression type will normally force the detent 20 outwardly to cause the inner end thereof to release the lip 19 and allow the receptacle 18 to tilt downwardly and discharge its contents into the casing 10.
A fusible link 25 is provided of any desired type, a cord of highly inflammable material or a light wire of readily fusible material being preferred. ()ne end of this link is connected with the free arm of the lever 22 in any desired manner, being shown in the present instance as being clamped to the end of the arm by means of a screw 26. Suitably secured to the casing 10 are a plurality of eyes 27. The free end of the link 25 is passed through one of the eyes and then through the remainder thereof and secured in any desirable manner as at 28. It will be seen b inspecting Fig. 3 that the link passes entire y around the receptacle l0 and it will therefore be severed by flame or intense heating upon either side of the receptacle.
In use the receptacle 18 will be filled with a suitable fluid such as sulfuric acid and the receptacle 1O filled to the desired height with a suitable solution such as water and soda. The detent 20 is placed in position under the lip of the receptacle 18 and the fusible link attached as above described holding the detent in position. It will readily be seen that if the fusible link is broken or destroyed by fire that the spring 24 will function to withdraw the detent 20 from the lip 19 of the receptacle 18, allowing the contents thereof to mingle with the contents of the casing 10, producing simultaneously a gas pressure and a non-combustible fluid which will be discharged at the spra pipe 14.
It wil be obvious to those familiar with the art that many changes are possible in the above construction without in any manner departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the type described a casing, a tilting receptacle Within said casing, a detent holding said receptacle in vertical Josition, a fusible link holding saiddetent in engagement with said receptacle and an annular row of spaced guide members arranged about and secured to said casing, said fusible link passing through each of said guide members.
2. n a device of the type described, a casing, a cup pivotally mounted within said casing, a receptacle carried by said cup, a detent holding said receptacle in vertical position, a fusible link holding said detent in engagement with said receptacle, and an annular row of spaced guide members arranged about and secured to said casing, said fusible link passing through each of said guide members.
In testimon whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0 two Witnesses.
ARLINGTON CHARTER.
