Description

E. A. BOYER.
DOOR HOLDING DEVICE FOR AUTOMOBILES. APPLICATION FILED JULY 19,1919.
1,348,260, Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
PATENT OFFICE.
EDMOND A. BOYER, OF PRINCETON JUNCTION, NEW JERSEY.
DOOR-HOLDING DEVICE FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1920;
Application filed July 19, 1919. Serial No.. 311,937.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMOND A. BoYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Princeton Junction, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Holding Devices for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to automobile attachments and particularly to means for holding a fore door of an automobile open to permit the circulation of air in the forward portion of the automobile.
In the majority of automobiles, particularly of the cheaper grades as now constructed, the occupants of the front seat are rendered very uncomfortable, particularly in the summer time, by the heat from the engine, and the only way to relieve this discomfort is by opening the fore doors and permitting the heat to escape and the air to circulate.
At the present time on the cheaper grades of cars, no means is provided for holding open the fore doors, and the general object of my invention is to provide a very simple and cheap attachment which may be easily put in place or as easily removed, whereby tht front doors may be held open to permit the circulation of the cool air in the forward portion of the car.
A further object is to provide a device of this character so constructed that when not in'use, it may be swung to the right under the steering wheel and out of the way, and thus does not in any way impede the action or use of the steering or control mechanism.
A further object is to provide a device of this character with means whereby it may be engaged with the handle of the door and with a side wall of the car, or swung out of the way when not in use.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device in applied position and holding the fore door of an automobile open;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the angular supporting bracket;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective View of the pivotal end of the arm 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the clip on the free end of the arm.
Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that my device comprises an angular bracket, designated 10, made of sheet metal, and provided with screw holes whereby it may be attached to the corner of the side wall of the car. This bracket is provided at the junction of its two leaves with outwardly projecting ears 11, perforated for the passage of a pintle. The arm 12 is to be made of wood or any other suitable material, and attached to the face of this arm at one end is the angular strip 13 which extends around upon the end of the arm and is bent to form a bead 14 to receive the pintle 15. The free end of the arm is formed with a spring clip which may be readily formed from the strip of metal, preferably slightly resilient, and bent to form a base 16, then outwardly extended away from the face of the arm, then longitudinally extended, as at 17, and inwardly extended beyond the end of the arm. This clip is slightly resilient and may be made to embrace or engage with the ordinary handle commonly found on the fore doors of automobiles. The leaves of the bracket 10, as before remarked, are provided with screw holes whereby it may be attached to any certain type of machine. One leaf is provided with a relatively large single screw hole and the other with two relatively smaller screw holes. The leaf a is adapted to be placed beneath the corner bracket and fastened by a screw 18 which is commonly used to hold the corner bracket in place.
When this device is not in operation, it may be swung inward to the right under the steering wheel clear of all the operating devices, or by removing the pintle the arm can be removed entirely, leaving only the supporting bracket which will, of course, not be in the way. When the device is in use, it is swung outward on its hinge and engaged over the handle of the automobile door. In view of the fact that this clip is resilient, it is adjustable to various style handles and is entirely flexible. While this device is made especially for the Chevrolet type, it can be applied on almost any make of car whose doors open from the front and have a latch. The device is very simple, can be easily made, is thoroughly practical, and may be readily removed when it is not de sired to be used.
I claim A door holding attachment for automobiles comprising an angular bracket having ears adapted to be applied to the corner of the side Wall of the automobile door opening,
an arm, a connecting member comprising a stripof metal secured to the side of one end portion of the arm and extending partially over the end of the arm, the end portion of said strip being beaded to provide a socket, said socket extending over the other portion of said end, a pintle fordetachably pivoting said bead between the ears of the bracket, and expansible means carried by the other end of said arm for connecting said arm to a 15 partially opened door to prevent movement of said door in either direction.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
REBA E. COOK, WILLIAM L. SLAYBACK.
