- UNITED. STATES WILLIAM D. LA BATT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
rAcKAeE-rAsrE En:
Specification of LettersPatent. Patented J 1 27 1920 Application filed February 18, 1920. Serial'lio. 359,657. 7
State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to features of novelty and advantage in a new and improved type of self contained or unitary complete package-fastener, such, for example, as are suitable for use on parcel-post packages and otherwise and which may be .unelasped or unfastened with facility if inspection of the parcels contents is desired. To this end the fastener or connecting appliance for detachably securing together the adjacent parts of the wrapping or confining material, such as paper, pasteboard, strawboard, either plain or corrugated, and the like, comprises a pair of opposed, adhesivecoated, flexible elements, such as paper or cloth, reinforced or otherwise, connected together by a metallic, joining or uniting, fastening clamp which is so designed and constructed as to permit temporary unfastening or separation of such end stickers when desired to permit total unwrapping or partial opening of the parcel and the examination of itscontents. II ith some kinds of packages or parcels it is essential that a tag be tied thereto, and one object of the invention is to provide means in the fastener for such application of the tag.
In general, the main and salient purpose of the invention is the provision of a stickerfastener of this general type which maybe easily unfastened, or unclasped when required, which firmly and securely holds the wrapping material in place, which. has its ends protected or shielded and hence un-, likely to become caught on other objects, which is inexpensive to manufacture, which maybe packed inbulk and occupy but small space, and which is so shaped and formed that a tag may be readily secured thereto.
In order that those skilled in this art may havea full and complete understanding of the invention and. the several advantages and benefits accruing from the use of appliances embodying'the same, I have'illustrated a desirable and preferred embodiment of the invention in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and to which reference should be had in connection.
with the following detailed description and throughout the several views of which drawing like reference characters refer to the same parts.
In this drawing:
Figure 1 is a face view of the improved style of fastener; I
Fig; 2 is a central longitudinal section 0 an enlarged scale; and
Fig. 3 is a back view of the appliance.
By reference to this drawing, it will be seen that the fastening-device or holdingappliance comprises two, oppositely arranged, adhesive-coated, flexible or pliable sticker-members '10 and 11, composed of suitable material, such as paper, cloth, or similar bodies, portions of which, if desired, may be reinforced or stiffened by. pieces or sections of appropriate stuff,- such as pasteboard 12, 12, the adhesive-coating on the rear or reinforced faces of such members having the reference characters 13, 13.
As is clearly illustrated, these two companion or'cooperative elements 10 and ll are in 'alinement or register with one another and in the same plane, althoughreversely disposed, with 'their adjacent edges or ends 14 and 15 spaced somewhat'apart for a purpose hereinafter indicated. Such adhesive fastening-element's are more or less firmly held in the proper matching position or co operative relation indicated, by a uniting, bent, sheet-metalclip or fastener 16 made from a section'of flat metal ribbon or band bent to appropriate shape. At the back of the fastener or securing appliance, that is, the side on.which the stickers 10 and '11 have their adhesive-coatings, such thin metal body extends longitudinally and desirably centrally'of the device, bridging or Spanning the space between the adjoining edges '14 and '15 and bearing against the back faces of the reinforcing elements.
Bothend' portions Hand 18 of such metal clamppierce the stiffened portions of the attachment elements 10 and 11, that is to say, extend forwardly through slots or apertures 19 and 20 therein, and in front of the stickers the ends or tabs 17 18, are bent 'downjflat toward one another against the shown so that either one may be bent up with equal facility to unclasp or iiii'fasten the appliance as a whole topermit opening of the package. They are also equally and readily accessible since each has its end flared upwardly or outwardly, thus readily permitting the introduction of any suitable implement, such as a knife-blade, under thev of the clip also affording a shield or pro-,
tection to the adjacent upturned ends 21 and 22 of the clip, henceeliminating any possibility of their catching 011 or tearing other bodies with which they otherwise might come in contact. It will be seen, therefore, that the sticker members are positively held separated to provide a suitable space between them for the accommodation of the loop or eye for the attachment of a tag, such portion of the clip acting also as a guard or shield for its upwardly-curved ends. 7
"From an understanding of this invention it will be seen that the fasteners can be bunched and shipped insuperposed relation or stacked on top of one another, thus occupying a minimum of space. Thepaper sticker-elements are so firmly held between the parts of the metallic clamp that they remain in proper register at all. times without danger of mal-alinement or twisting out of position, t l V V v Although in this application only one embodim'ent of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible of a variety of embodiments and is notlimited or restricted to the precise and exact structural details presented, since these may be changed in more or less radical ways without departure from. the substance and essence of the invention and without the sacrifice of any of its substantial benefits and advantages.
Iclaim: V 1. A self-contained separable packagefastener of the character. described including incombination a pairof sticker-elements adhesive-coated on their back faces for application to the package, and. a metal clip detachablysecuring said'elements together and having as flexible end portion overlying the frontfaceof one of said elements and adaptedto bebentup to permit shielded by a.
disconnection of said elements and normally part of the clip, substantially as described. r
2. A self-contained separable packagefastenerof the character described including in combination a pair of sticker-elements adhesive-coated on their back faces for application to thepackage, and a clip detachably securing said elements together and having flexible opposed end portions either one of which may be bent up to separate the fastener, said end portions being normally shieldedfby a part of the clip between them, substantially as described.
A self-contained separable package- 'fastener of the character described including in combination a pair of sticker-eloinents adhesive-coated on their back faces for application to the package, and a metal' clip detachably securing said elements together and having flexible opposed end portions lying flat against the front faces'of such elements either one of which may be bent up to separate the fastener, said end] portions having outwardly-bent terminal parts normallytshielded by a part of the clip between them, substantially as described.
