movement of the button, for directing the thread through the button.
The attachment herein described includes a base plate 10 adapted to be secured in any suitable manner, this base plate having mountel thereon the operative elements oflthe button holding means and the mechanism for giving to the latter an oscillating movement. Carried by the base plate 10 is a guidlng member 11 and a plurality of guiding members 12 and 13 oppositely located and being spaced apart at the upper ends. Between these guiding members 11, 12, and 13, a barrel 14 is designed to reciprocate when actuated by means connected with the needle bar 15 of the machine. The movement of barrel 14 is limited by stops 16 and within this barrel is mounted a plungerr17 under the control of a spring 18. The underside of the barrel is provided with an aperture 19 engaged by the uplturnedV end of a'flat spring 20 which spring is thrown out of engagement when the plunger moves forward or toward the needle bar. The plunger 17 is slotted for the reception of the end of lever 32 and the stem ofv plunger passes through element 17 fixed in the barrel and carries a head 18 at the eXtreme end. The first movement of the lever 32 toward the left in Fig. 7 is to compress the spring 18, and when the element 20 is pressed downwardly, the barrel 14 is shot forward under the action of the spring, producing a sharp and prompt movement of the button holding device by the mechanism described below, while the needle is free of the button.
Carried by the side of the barrel 14 is a vrflat spring 2 2 engaging a rack bar 24 which `bar is movable on a plate 25 extending from the side of the barrel, the rack bar `being slotted at 27 and 28, the slots extending at an acute angle with reference to the longitudinal aXis of the rack bar. The headed pins 2,9 and 30 pass through the slots and serve to guide the rack bar in its movement toward and away from a rotary member serving to give tothe button and holding device the krequired movement for placing the various apertures into position for receiving the thread.
The devices above described for actuating the rack bar are operated bv means of the angle lever 32 pivoted at 33, one end of this lever being slotted as'shown at 34 for engagement by a pin 35 carried by a bracket or the like 36 connected with: a needle bar 15 by means ofthe needle clamp screw 37. The vertically reciprocating movement of the needle bar imparts movement to the angle lever 32 and through the mechanism specified including the barrel 14, to the rack bar and thence to the elements described below.-
' The base plate is upwardly deflected at pointY 40 and then horizontally deflected at 4l, Vthis portionlast named being'slotted as shown at 42 permitting member 4l to be securedby the clamping screw the pressure foot.
' rlhe button holding device is designated 45 and includes a plurality of jaws 46 and 47, the longer jaw being referred to by the Ynumber last indicated. These jaws are deflected at 48 and 49 and the longer jaw is slotted as shown at 50, one edge of the slotted portion being provided with a series of teeth 54 constituting a rack, and the otherv jaw 46 being slotted Vand provided with av series of teeth 54', the series of teeth last named being opposite to the series first named. A threaded spindle 57 carries a pinion 58on its lower end, this pinion engaging each series of teeth, so that the rotation of the pinion by means of thumb nut 59 will move the jaws in opposite directions, Vthus providing for theholding of buttons of different sizes, the centers being in the sameV position withY reference to the needle andV tothe various elements of the attachvment. Y,An Yadditional thumb nut designated 61 constitutesa look nut` Above the shorter jaw 46 is a plate member 68, this memberl and the aforesaid jaws being mounted with* in a channel member 65 having on one end thereof an extension constituting anl actuating bar 66 deflected at a point intermediateA ofV its ends as shown in drawings. The free end of this bar is provided with an aperture 67 in which is mounted a flanged` sleeve 68 through which passes a threaded spindle 69 engaged by thumb nut 70. The lower end of spindle69 carries ahead 71 having two flat sides and two beveled sides,
the beveled portions 72 and 73 engaging the .undercutwalls 74 of the slot 75 in the ro-` tary disk member (6. The slot 7 5 extends from a point near the. outer edge of the Y disk to a point somewhat beyond the center andpermits of movement of thespindle in a direction radially of the disk, so that Vspindle 69 is movable toward and away from the center foradjusting theY extent of throw of the button holding device in order that Veach hole therein may register with the needle and receive the thread. Pivot 77 is lating movement of that member and of the clamping"jaws" carried thereby.
-The disk rotates with a disk 8O having connection therewith by means of a Series of pins 81 forming Aa device resembling a lantern wh'eel, the` -series of pins being engaged by rack bar 24, for Vactuating-and giving the oscillatingmovementto the Ybutton holding means. Y This series `of teeth in v'the .lantern wheel is engaged by .av holding pawl 83 acting underv thetension of aV spring84, ,y y Y TheV operation of rthe device has been adequately set forth in connection with thel clescription off nthe construction .anddwill be fully understood from that' description.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. In ai device of the'lclass described, 'atV base plate, a reciprocable, member mounted thereon, a rack bar movable with the recip rocablemember, a rotary device, a button holding device, said rotary. device being en" V gaged by V,thefrack bar and giving tothe button holding vdevice an oscillating movement and means for` actuating the reciprocable member from the needle bar-of a machine, said means including a resilient device placed under compression and then automatically released. Y
2. In a device of the class described, a base plate, a vreciprocable member mounted thereon, Vmeans for limiting the4 movement of said member, a rack bar movable with thereciprocating member and having a Vlim- 1 ited'independent movement with reference thereto, a reciprocating and.v oscillating button holding device -monnted on the base Y plate, and a rotary memberv actuated bythe rack bar and imparting to the button holding Vdevice reciprocating and oscillating movements. y' .c
y.3. In a device Jof theclassdescribed, a base plate, areciprocable memberV mounted thereon, means for limitingV the movement of said'membe'r, arack bar Vmovable'with the reciprocating member and having a limited independentY movement with reference i thereto, a reciprocating and oscillating button holding device mounted on the base plate, and a rotary member actuated by the rack bar and imparting to the button holding device reciprocating and oscillating Vmovements, said rotary member being pro-V vided with a radially extending slot, va de-A vice adj'ustablewithin said slot, and means for connecting said device last named with an element ofY the button holding device,l 1
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
