1 To all whom it may cof/zoem:
Be it known that l, FREDERICK D. Goon- LAKE, at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, 4have invented new and useful Improvements in Manifold-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for heating the intake manifold of internal combustion engines so as to insure the vaporlzation of the fuel-in cold) weather and the principal objectof the invention is to associate a chamber with the manifold which 1s adapted to contain a heating medium to heat the manifold.
Another object of the invention is to provide a torch member with means for easily and quickly connecting it with the chamber.
rlhis invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specically pointed out in the appended claim.
ln describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is an elevation showing the invention applied to a combined exhaust andf inlet manifold.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showmg the 1nterior of the heating chamber.
JFig. `3 is a sectional view taken approximately through the center of Fig. 1. l
Fig. 4 is a view, with parts broken away,
showing the invention attached to the ordinary type of inlet manifold.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 1 indicates the exhaust manifold and 2 indicates the inlet manifold, these parts being formed integral with each other, as shown. ln carrying out my invention I form a chamber 3 on the front part of the combined manifolds. The side walls of said chamber being bent inwardly, to form recesses 4 to permit the cross arms, which hold the device to the engine, to engage the central part of the device. The wall of the chamber is also provided with the horizontally arranged semicircular part 5 which extends outwardly and at one end a screw threaded opening 6 isl formed to receive the screw threaded head 7 of the torch member 8. This member may a citizen of the United States, residing.
be made of perforated tubing to receive absorbent material which is adapted to receive a supply of gasolene or other inflammable fluid. The front wall. of the chamber is provided with an opening by a hinged nap 10. lhi's opening may be used for igniting the torch member by a match and also acts as an inlet for the air circulating through the chamber. rlhe upper part of the chamber is provided with air openings ll. As will be seen the torch member will it in the semi-circular chamber, formed by the projection 5 and these parts -are lso arranged that the torch will be l0- cated adjacent the horizontal part of the inlet manifold. rl-he rear part of the chamber extends over the upper part of the vertical portion of the manifold.
lt will thus be seen that when theautomobileis to be started in cold weather the torch is dipped in gasolene orthe like'and either ignited before being placed in the heating chamber or after it is placed in said chamber. The flame from the burning fuel `will quickly heat the chamber and this heat will be transmitted-to the manifold and thus 'the explosive charge passin to the cylinders will be heated and the porized.
ln the modification shown in Fig. t the chamber 3 is formed on the inlet manifold which is separated from the exhaust manifold. ln other respects this form of the invention is similar to that above described and operates in the same manner.
The manifolds with my invention applied thereto may be manufactured to sell as a separate article of commerce and may be applied to existin models of automobiles by the owners without any special tools as the device is simplyr substituted for the manifold which is-originally on the car.
AThe arrangement of air openings in the walls of the chamber will provide sufficient air for the thorough combustion of the gases arising from the torch member and will cause` al circulation of air in said chamber, to produce an intense heat in the upper part thereof so that the manifold will be intensely heated very quickly to insure the proper vaporization of the fuel in the explosive mixtura It is thought from the foregoing description'that the 'advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
Y I desire it to be understood that I may uel therein va- 9 which is covered make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
A manifold for internal combustion en gines having a heating chamber located on its outer face, said chamber having an enlarged lower part having an opening in one end, the side walls of the chamber curving i0 inwardly above the enlargement and having' upwardly extending openings therein forming air inlets and a torch member extending into the enlarged lower part of the chamber and having screw threaded' connection with 15
