Be it known that l, Groen E. Riel-1r- NoUn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kearney, in the county of Bedford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints and Chairs for Railwaylails, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a strong and simple joint for railway rails obviating the necessity of bolts, nuts and similar hold-fast devices, the joint being easily and quickly assembled mounted upon the ties ready for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a strong means of connecting adjacent ends of rails together producing a firm lock and presenting a substantially unbroken tread surface for the travel of rolling stock thereover, the shock of the wheels when passingthe joint being prevented.
A still further object of the invention is way rails and means for mounting the same upon the ties without using fish-plates or bolts, thereby saving expense as well as the time injlaying and repairing railway tracks.
llfith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature ofthe invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more i fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out inthe appended claims.`

It will be understood that my form of joint is serviceable for track rails of different kinds, for both railroads as well as mines and other places where the quick laying of temporary tracks is found desirable.
The interlocking inale and female ends of two adjacently positioned rails will be described it being understood however that each rail has its opposite ends formed in said different manners so that the continuous line of traplk is easily and quickly positioned toget er. k Two adjacent ties 10 are herein illustrated of the usual form provided transversely of the road-bed, a rectangular bed-plate or chair 11 being positioned thereon for spanning said ties with marginaly flanges 1Q upon its upper face for the reception therebetween of the base flanges of the engaging ends of adjacent rails 13 and 111. The lower face of the plate 12 has roughened portions 15 in the form of spaced grids which engage the tops of the ties 10 and prevent the slipping or creeping of the plate 11 upon the ties.
The rail end 13, termed the male member, possesses the usual forni of a railway rail having a web 16 connecting the tread 17 with kthe base or flanges 18 thereof. The base flanges and web are cutaway or terminate in an end face 19 of inverted T-shape forni while the tread 17 is continued or extended as at 2O having a terminal tongue 21 provided with an oval-shaped head 22, the sides 23 of which are downwardly convergent or tapered. The tongue 21 is of less thickness than the tread 20 ,and is cutaway at one side as at 24, thereby forming a shoulder or face 25 at the end of the tread 20, at one side of and beneath the tongue 21. rIhe tread extension 20 has a central longitudinal slot 2G upon its lower face of the same width as and terminating adjacent the cutaway end of the webi16.
The cooperating rail end le or female end portion, comprises a similar rail having a web 16 connecting the tread 17 thereof with the base flanges 18', the tread portion 17 of the end 14 however being cut away or terminating as at 27 while the base flanges 18Y are extended in terminal portions `28 and the web 16 is similarly extended in an end Vportion29v providing an, inverted T-shaped end face 19 spaced fromV the tread end 27. i
llVhen the rail ends 13 and 14k are positioned in longitudinal alinement, the T- shaped faces 19 'and 19 are adapted for substantially abutting engagement, the web portion 29 being extended upwardly above thc lower edge of the tread 17 after the nature of a rib received within the slotV 26 of the tread 17 of the cooperating end 13. rIhe end portion ofthe, tread 17 is provided witha recess or cutaway portion 30 complementally formed in respect' to the tongue 21 providing an oval tapered socket 31 for the reception of the head 22, the said tongue 21 with its head being Aadapted to seat upon they VVbottom 32 of the recessl() when the joint is assembled.' Lateral strains are taken up by the web portion 29 fitting in the slot 26 :so that the webY portion of Athejoint ,possesses great strengthand eliminates a` complete trans-l verse break or-crack between the abutting .ends of thetreads'of the rails as is usually i the case.
