Description

R. M. Hvm.
VALVE FOR HYDROCARBON ENGINES.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 24, 1918. I 1,346,204.. Patented July 13, 1920,
cation with-the compression space by one or more minute apertures 26. The' quantity of fuel admitted is controlled bv the needle valve 27, which coperates-With the seat 19,
and occupies the conduit 18. A space 28,-

into the casing and forms a bearing in a recess therein. The shaft, as shown in Fig. 2, is packed by means cfa. gland nut 33, the shaft terminating in a crank 34, which may be connected to suitable lautomatic or ,manual Agoverning means as desired. A governor is indicated at 35 which isfadapted to actuate Athe arm 34, suitable connections 36 being provided .for-'that purpose. It will be noted that in order to provide the segmental portion of the shaft the same is notched at the point of engagement with the needle valve. Y
By providing a shaft of suitable size, the required lift of the valve may be secured and as the controlling crank 34, `may be of any desired length, the governing action may be finally adjusted. The important advantage, however, is that the needle valve is not packed or restrained in any manner and even though the spring 30, should become broken, the valve lWould seat by the combined action of gravity and the suction developed on the intake stroke of the piston.
Obviously the manner of mounting the needle valve and the means for securing the desired result may be varied without departure from the lspirit of my invention.
l claim:
l. In an oil engine, the combination of avalve casing, a fuel cup on the lower end thereof, a puppet valve for controlling the time of admission of liquid fuel and a small the caslng and having a portion engagmg j said flange, and means .for packing said shaft at the point of entrance thereof to the casing, substantially as described.
2. ln a hydro-carbon engine, the combination of means-for supplying fuel, a governor-controlled needle valve for controlling the quantity of fuel supplied, said needle valve having a projection at a point in the length thereof, a notched shaft located adjacent to the needle valve, the projection on the needle 'valve being located in the notch in the shaft whereby the position of the valve is controlled by the rotation of the shaft, substantially as described.
3. In a hydro-carbon engine, the combination with ya cylinder, of an igniting unit comprising a body adapted to be inserted into a recess in the cylinder, a fuel cup carried by saidv body, a conduit in said body for conductingV liquid fuel to said cup, a governor-controlled needle valve mounted in said conduit, said needle valve having a flange, a VVspring engaging said flange, a cap screwed into the body and serving to close the fuel passage and to support said spring, and a notched shaft also mounted in said body on the needle valve engages said notch, the parts being so arranged'that upon oscillation of said shaft the needle valve is caused to be reciprocated, substantially as described.
