the city of Stettin, German Empire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furnaces for BurningItefuse; and I do "hereby declare the following to be a full,
' clear, and exact description of the same. My invention relates to furnaces in which the combustion of refuse and the like takes place especially to furnaces of this kind havlng no grate.-

According to my invention double conical nozzles are inserted in the shaft of the furnace which is preferably provided with a watercooled iron mantle or jacket. Through these nozzles the air necessary for the cornbustion is blown in and one feature of my invention consists in the fact that the distance of the narrowest section of the nozzles from the interior of the mantle of the com-- bustion, shaft is about one-third of the thick ness of said jacket, in order to cause thecur-' rents of air to-unite before they impinge the charge and penetrate the middle of the refuse column without eddy currents being formed. By this means the air can penetrate to the ,mi ddle of the refuse column without eddymg currents being formed' Experiments have shown that by using the new nozzles the consumption of power in blowing in the air is much reduced, while on the other hand the output of the furnace is considerably -increased.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States is 1. In a furnace for burning refuse, the combination of a furnace shaft, a cooling jacket surrounding the same, and a plural- .ity of air-feeding nozzles passing through the jacket and surrounding and communicating with the shaft, each said nozzle having an opening therethrough in the form of two truncated cones, the longitudinal axes of which coincide, and with the narrower ends thereof in contact, to provide a smooth air passage through the nozzle.
