PEN 0R PENCIL ATTACHMENT.

Be it known that 1 1, AURA J. SANDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Springs, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen or Pencil Attachments; and I do hereby declare the-following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a pen or pencil attachment and has for one of its objects the provisionofa device of this character,

whereby the writing end of the pen or' pencil may be illuminated, making the device especially useful for writing during night time. a I

Another object of this invention is the provision of a cylindrical casing having means for connecting it to a 'pen or pencil, in which is mounted a battery and an elecelectric lamp by the battery, the writing end of the pen or pencil will be illuminated and also the article which is being written upon.

A further object of this invention is the provision of an arm formed upon the casing and having its forward end curved d0wnwardly and flared to form an electric lamp socket to receive'the electric lamp so as to position the same adjacent the writing end of the pen or pencil.

A still further object of this invention is the provisionof a pen or pencil attachment of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efiicient, and which may be manufactured andsold at a comparatively low cost.

With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my in vention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view in accordance with my invention,

Referring in detail to the drawing,- the numeral 1 indicates a substantially cylin-J drical casing having one end closed by a cap 2. Mounted within the casing 1 is a pair of dry cells or batteries 3 connected together by a contact 4. One of the batteries is grounded to the casing 1 by a contact 5' carried by the forward .end of the casing. Formedupon the upper forward end of the casing l is a hollow arm 6, which has its forward end inclined downwardly as shown at 7 and flared to form a lamp socket 8 in which is seated an electric lamp 9.

The upper rear end of the casing 1 is provided with an elongated slot 10, to slidably receive a switch 11 having formed thereon, a handle 12, which is disposed exteriorly of the casing for sliding the switch forwardly and rearwardlywith1n the casing. A contact 13 is formed upon the switch 11 and is adapted to engage one of the batteries. A wire 14: is connected to the switch 11 and to the electric lamp 9, whereby upon operatother half of the clamp as shown at 19.

Formed upon the portion of the clamp 19 is a handle 20 for the purpose of moving the curved members of the clamp apart so that they may, receive a pen or pencil as illustrated in Fig. 1, thus the device is dis posed directly above the pencil and the downwardly curved end 7 of the arm 6 disposes the electric lamp 9 at a point'adjacent the writing end of the pen or pencil so that the article on which is being written. will be efliciently illuminated upon moving the contact-13 in engagement with the battery by the switch 11.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it

will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

What is claimed is:

A pen or pencil attachment comprising a cylindrical casing having one end closed and a slot adjacent its other end, means securing the casing to a pen or pencil, a tubular arm formed on the closed end of the casing and in communication with the interior thereof, an electric lamp secured in the end of said arm, a bat- Ltery in said casing and having one pole thereof electrically connected to the casing, a removable cap closing the open end of the casing, an insulated contact arm slidable in said slot, a handle secured to'said contact arm and extending through the slot, a conductor connected to said contact arm and extending through the casing and tubular arm and connected to the lamp, and a right angled'extension formed on said contact army and adapted to be moved with the arm by the handle to engage the other pole of the battery. i
