To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that l, ARTHUR it. @rrnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at llflrie, in the county of Erie and titate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in 'lhreadingllie Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which is appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
ll ly invention relates to threading die mechanism, and particularly to rotatable dies having means for tapering the thread being cut therewith, and automatically opening and closing the die at predetermined points in its traverse.
The object of my invention is to provide a rotatable threading die with means whereby the die will be either gradually opened as it moves on to the work, so that the thread cut thereby will be somewhat tapered, or according to its adjustment the thread will be cut straight, and to provide mechanism :oioperating with the die whereby when the thread is completed the die will be instantly opened, moved back off of the worlr and closed ready to out another thread The features of my invention are hereinafter fully setlforth and described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which l llfigure 1, is a front end view of a threading die embodying features of my inven tion.

lln these drawings it represents the die holder, supporting the dies a mounted there in elevation of the side view in eleva in; B the driving stern thereonafl the rota table cam-sleeve on the body, operating the dies in the usual manner; and D the plate ring secured to the end of the die-holder A, securing the cam-sleeve in place thereon, all of which partsare of the usual construction and operation.
Mounted upon the cam-sleeve C there is a ring 1E adapted to slide back and forth on the cam-sleeve U, and secured to this ring R there are tubular guide rods .lF which extend back through the annular extension A of the die-holder it, and inter cilia causes the ring l3 to rotate in unison with the dieholder A. These hollow guide rods F are provided with internal spiral springs ll (see Fig. 2) which operate normally to force the ring ll forward toward the outer end of the cam-sleeve C, to the point illustrated in Figs 2, 3 and 4:.
On the outer surface of the cam-sleeve C, l secure a longitudinal guide Gr which e);- tendsthrough an annular recess (2 in the inside face of the ring 1E and preferably has one edge 9 thereof inclined to the axis of the cam-sleeve C; and on the inside face of the ring ll there is secured a movable plate ll, one end of which contacts with the edge 9 of the guide G and operates as the ring is moved back toward the extension. The movable plate H is adjustable on the ring lll which is provided with a scale e for determining the amount of such adjustment. Mounted in the extension it of the die-holder At (see Figs. 3 and l) there is a segment of bevel gear l which engages a segment of gear-teeth c on the cam-sleeve C and operates to rotate the cam-sleeve "U to close the dies at whenthe rearward traverse of the die is completed, For operating ing die is preferably mounted in the machine-stock or head J of an automatic screw machine provided with the usual gearing (not shown) for rotating the dies and other tools mounted in such head, and on the upper part of the machine frame K (see Figs. 5 and 6) I mount a lever L L, the part L thereof being in the form of a yoke provided on the end of each arm thereof with rolls Z adapted to engage the face of the ring E on the die and force it back on the camsleeve 0 thereof as the die moves on to the workM, and during said movement cause the end h of the plate II on said ring to travel back on the inclined surface of the guide (ion the cam-sleeve C, to slightly rotate, and thereby gradually open the dies a during the process of cutting the thread 022. on the work M,until the rin E passes off of the rear end of the guide G? which allows the cam-sleeve C to rotate and open the die. When the ring E on the die-holder engages the roller Z on the bifurcated lever L, the lever L gives way until said lever reaches the limit of its movement, when the rollers Z force the ring E backward on the die holder, and when the die holder recedes from the work, M, the spring-pressed plunger engaging the lever L causes the bifurcated levers L L to swing clear from the work M as shown in Fig. 5, so that access thereto may be had.
For closing the die for again moving it on to the Work, I mount on the part K, of the machine frame a centrally pivoted lever N N; the upper arm N of this lever extends upward opposite the central line of the part A of the die-holder A where it is provided with an inwardly extending lug or boss 7 adapted to be brought into engagement with the arm I on the segmental gear I and rotate it, and thereby operate the cam-sleeve C to close the dies a ready for a new operation. This lever L L is actuated by having a roller a mounted on the lower end of said arm, contact with the surface of a rotating drum O mounted in the machine frame, which drum is provided with an inclined projection 0 which, as the drum 0 rotates, is at the proper time brought into contact with the roller 11/, which operates to move the boss n on the arm N of the lever, inwardly so as to engage the arm I as the dieholder is rotated.
The drum 0 is also provided with a ramgroove P which is engaged by a roller 7) on the lower part of the machine stock or head support J and operates as the drum 0 is rotated to move the head or stock J forward towardthe work and backward therefrom in the usual manner.
From the foregoing description of the mechanism and its operation it is believed that further description of the operation of the mechanism is unnecessary.

In a device of the character described, a die-holder, dies mounted therein, a rotatable cam sleeve on said die-holder for actuating said dies, an inclined plate secured thereon, a longitudinally movable ring engaging said inclined plate to rotate said cam ring, and means to prevent the rotation of said ring on the die-holder, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, a die-holder, dies mounted therein, a rotatable cam sleeve on said die-holder for actuating said dies, an inclined plate secured thereon, a lono'itiulimilly movable ring ongaging said inclined plate to rotate said cam ring, and spring actuated guide rods secured to said ring and slidably mounted in the die holder to prevent rotation of said ring 011 said die holder, substantially as set forth.
3. In a device of the character described, a rotatable die holder, dies mounted therein,
a cam-sleeve rotatable upon the die holder for actuating said dies. miter gear teeth thereon, a circumferential shoulder on said die holder, a shaft radially mounted on said shoulder, a miter gear wheel secured on said shaft and intermeshing with the gear teeth on said cam ring, and a lever secured on said shaft to operate said shaft and gear wheel to rotate said cam ring, substantially as set forth.

In a device of the character described, a self opening and closing rotatable thread dieholder, dies mounted therein, a cam-sleeve rotatable on the die-holder, a ring movable longitudinally over the cam-sleeve, a guideplate thereon engaging said ring, spring actuated guide rods on said ring sliding through an extension on the die-holder and a yoke lever 011 the machine frame engaging the front face of said ring as the threading die moves upon the work and moving the ring backward over the cam-sleeve, substantially as set forth.
5. In a device of the character described. a rotatable threading-die comprising substantially a die-holder, threading dies mounted therein, a cam-sleeve rotatable upon the die-holder for actuating the threading dies,- a segment of gear on said cinnsleeve, a segment of f f(-?2ll''\\'ll(tl mounted in the die-holder and intermeshing with the gear on the cam-sleeve, an arm on said gear wheel for rotating it, and means on the machine frame for intermittently engaging said arm and rotating it, substantially as set forth.
6. In a device of the character described, a rotatable threading-die mechanism comirising substantially a dieholder, threading dies mounted therein, a cam-sleeve rotatable upon the die-liolder for opening and cloaing the threading dies, a segment of gear on the cam-sleeve, a segmental gea1--wheel mounted in the die-holder and intermeshing with the gear teeth on the cam-sleeve, an arm on said gear Wheel for rotating it, an oseillating lever pivoted on the machine tit frame and movable into engagement "with said geanwlneel arm and a cam-drum engaging said lever and lntermittently operating 10 it, substantially as set forth.
