terraces,
l-lppIication filed 11113; 31, 1919. fierial No. 314,546.
To all whom it may concern:
it known that l, WILLIAM Ln Finite cots, a citizen of the United ldtates, and resident of the city of Pawtuclret, in the county of Providence and State oi lthode llsland, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in "the construction of fluid pressure valves and has for its object to provide such a valve more particularly adapted for use as a socalled ball cock for flush tanks, the same being arranged to close the discharge opening ot the intlowing pressure when resting upon the valve seat and to be moved to open position against the inflowing pressure.
it. turther object of the invention is to provide an elongated tapering portion on the valve extending toward the entering lluid pressure by which arrangement the pressure serves to assist in carrying the valve to and holding the same closed against its seat, the tapering portion serving to reduce the force required to open the valve against the pressure thereby insuring a tight valve and also one that can be readily operated by action of a ball float of the minimum size.
With these objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described,
tl ti and particularly pointed out in the ap pended claims.
l n the accompanying drawings:
Figure 'l is a sectional side elevation showing my improved valve as applied to a thish tank.
2- is a detail side elevation of the valve.
Fig. 3* is an end view ot the valve,
Referring to the drawings, designates the ordinary flush tank which is supplied with water through the pressure pipe ll. lhe ball cock in this construction comprises a valve body portion 12 which is connected by the cmuiiling 13 to the pressure pipe. lln this body is formed a valve seat 15 and a discharge opening 16.
My improved valve 17 is mounted to move endwise in this casing and is provided with a stem 18 extending back through the rear ot the casing. The valve proper has a conical or tapering shaped head 19 which eX- tends toward the entering pressure so that the fluid instead oi acting against the flat face of a disk impinges against the conical or tapering face thereozt and so serves to slightly reduce its eltective action upon the valve permitting it to be moved outwardly or against a pressure by the exertion of less force than would be the case it the conical portion were not present.
' At the base of this cone ll preferably secure a leather seat 20 to insure the valve being tight when resting upon its seat.
This valve may be operated by any suitable means but in it 1, l have shown an arm 21L pivoted at 22 in the bracket 23 its lower end being pivotally connected to the end 24L ot the valve stem 18. l have also provided. an upwardly extending boss 25 on this arm in which the float rod 26 is adjustably mounted, the float 27 being secured to the outer end of this rod whereby when the water level in the tanlr is lowered the float falls and opens the valve permitting the water to again run into and fill the tank raising it to a given level, and when the tank is sutliciently full again the valve 17 through the action of the float 27 is moved to its seat 15 where it is held tight both by the action of the float and also by the pres sure otthe water against it.
llt is found in practice that an endwise movable valve having a cone shaped portion extending toward the inflowing pressure has a number oi. advantages; first, the pressure serves to assist in carrying the valve to its seat and holding it tight thereon, and second, that a much smaller ball is required to operate the valve to open it against the pressure than what would be required when I the valve is constructed without the tapering portion.
lhe device is extremely simple and practical in construction and by its use the water pressure serves to carry the valve to its seat and hold it tight and the valve is easily operated.
The foregoing description is directed solely toward the construction illustrated, but l desire it to be understood that l rcserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claim.
ll claim:
A ball cock comprising a valve casing having a pressure inlet opening a seat and a discharge opening, and endwise movable lllNl valve in said casing having a seat portion, a (sonically-shaped end member 011 said seat portion extending toward the entering pressure fluid and of a length approximately two and one-half times the diameter of said seat portion to reduce the operating resistance of said valve when moved against the pressure, a stem on said valve, and a lever connected with said stem to positively control both the opening and closing movements of said valve.
In testimony whereof: I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM LE FRANCOIS.
