RAILROAD-TIE.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, VVILLTAM ToMLINsoN, a subject of the King of England, residing at St. Catherines, in the Province of On tario and Dominion of Canada,'have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties, of which the following is a specication.
The invention is designed to provide a new and improved form of railroad'tie formed with a steel outer covering and a concrete interior whereby the most effective construction for strength and length of Service is obtained. It is further designed to provide a device of this cliaracterrin which unique means is provided for the attachment of the rails to the tie. Y l
To the exact construction in which it is shown and described, the invention is not to be restricted. The right isreserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or"alterations are comprchended in spirit, by the annexed claim.

s shown in the drawings, the tie is formed by providing two longitudinal channel members l which form the two sides of the tie respectively. Lattice bars 2 Ydiagonally disposed unite the two channel members at the bottom in such a manner that the two stand in spaced relation to each other with their flanges facing. The lattice bars are riveted or otherwise suitably attached to the bottom flanges.
The two channel members are provided on the top with plates 3 which are riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the top flanges and these plates together with a hinged cover 4 constitute thetop covering of the tie. The two plates 3 have their facing ends spaced apart and the cover` 4 serves to cover this portion of the tie between the two facing ends of these plates. The provision of the door or cover 4 provides for the pouring in of the concrete after the steel work of the tie has been set up and if the ballast for the tie be crushed stone, the concrete will unite therewith and when set will provide a firm mounting for the tie.
