PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. IBISSELL AND CHARLES G. BEAUJREGARD, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
, FEED-REGULATOR FOR ROADSANLDING MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES H. BISSELL and CHARLES Gr. BEAUREGARD, citizens of the United States, residing at .T-ro in the county of Rensselaer, State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed Regulators for Road- Sanding Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as wlll enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionrelates to road working machines, and has particular reference to. machines for distributing sand, gravel, or other like material over a road surface.
The object of the invention is to provide a practicable and complete spreading'machine in which provision is made for adjusting the amount of material to be delivered, and also, in which adjustments can be made to permit the regular and proper feeding of materials of different character.
' As a more particular object, the invention contemplates the construction of a hopper, having a delivery opening across wh1ch is mounted a swinging gateway and a slidable cutoff, whose relationship is such that the area of the delivery opening can be adjusted not only to feed materials in a varying quantity from the hopper, but also to permit the feeding of. materials of various kinds past a feed roller, which is mounted below the hopper.
With the above objects 1n View, and such others relating to the details of construction as may hereinafter appear, our invention will now be fully set forth and described,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings. a
. In the drawings:
t Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ma chine, 1
Fig. 2,is a vertical longitudinal section through the machine, l i D Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed view of a clutchin the driving mechanism,
Fig. 6.is a section on'line'66 of 1g. 5,
and I.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged detailed view. 7
- Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a horizontally disposed frame-work which is supported upon a running gearwhich includes the steering wheels Specification of Letters Patent.

middle of the vehicle, but do not meet the lower edge of each plate, being terminated short of the point of convergence of the plates, to provide an opening to which material is delivered from the hopper.
The forward bottom plate 7, has across its lower edge a plate 8, which is mounted upon the hinges 9, and in effect continues the bottom plate 7, since its upper surface lies flush with the upper surface of said plate 7 The free. end of the plate 8 continues rearwardly in a slightly curved lip 10, which underlies the distributing or feed-roller l1, and mounted against the lower face of the plate 6 in slidable relation thereto is 'a-cutoff gate 12, the latter being. adapted to be carried forward in its guideways so that its free end will contact with or may be adjustably spaced from the plate 8. Said. cutoff gate 12, has its edges mounted in guideways 13,
which are formed by angle bars which are a secured in spaced relation to the bottom of the plate 6, so that the latter and the cutoff gate lie in close contact. i
The plate 8 has secured transversely across its lower face a lifting bar 14 which extends beyond the longitudinal edges thereof, so that its endsrmayflhave secured thereto the extremities of the chains or cables 15, which then pass over the pulleys 16, secured to the sides of the hopper and thence, to a windingdrum or staff 17, mounted upon the rear of the vehicle and-controlled by means of a hand-wheel 18. The cutoff gate 12, has provided on its lower face'a plurality of rack bars 19, meshing with the rack bars 19 and the corresponding plurality of pinions 20,
which are fixed upon a shaft 21, which ex is supported in hangers upon the side rails of the frame 1, and supports a series of antifriction rollers 22, which bear against the lower face of the cutoff gate 12, so as to reduce the frictional engagement of the latter 7 with its guideways.
42 of the roller 11, and is held at this point The distributing or feed roller 11, which has been above mentioned, has its spindle 27, mounted in a pair of brackets or hangers 28, which are secured upon the side rails of the frame 1, the hangers 28 having upright guides in which are mounted blocks 29 borne normally downward by springs 30, upon the tops of the spindles 27, so that the roller is free to rise as necessary when obstructions such as stones are crowded between the peri hery of the roller 11 and the V lip 10.
ounted upon one end of the roller spindle 27, is a chain sprocket 30, over which exends a drive chain 31, which is also passed over a second sprocket 32, mounted upon the axle of the corresponding rear wheel 3, the arrangement being thus such that the lower portion of the roller 11 is rotated away from the hopper. This sprocket 32, is directly carried upon a slidable hub 33, and has upon its outer face a series of clutch teeth 34, which are adapted to inter-engage with a corresponding set of teeth which are formed upon a plate 35, secured to the wheel 3. The slidable hub 33 is engaged by a shipper 36, which is formed upon the lower end of a rotatable rod 37, vertically mounted upon the side of the rearmost standard 5, and has a crank 38, by means of which the clutch elements may be engaged or disengaged in order to operate or disconnect the roller 11 from the rear wheel 3. A set of ball-bearings 39, may be placed between the slidable hub 33 and the annular yoke 40, with which the shipper 87 is directly connected, thereby avoiding an undue amount of friction.
The roller 11, has mounted upon its peripheral surface a series of longitudinal ribs 41, which adjacent theends of the roller are bent rearwardly at 42 to throw sand or other material which is fed'from the hopper away from the ends of the roller. In its closed positionthe plate 8, stands at a minimum space or distance from the ribs 41 and by means of stops 43, formed on the hangers 28, against which the extended ends of the rod 14 strike as the plate is brought up to its closed position. V
The top of the hopper 4, is normally closed by means of a screen cover, 44, which is secured thereto by means of hinges 45, so that the cover may be swung into or out of position without difiiculty.
A suitable steering mechanism is provided for the control of the machine on the road, in that a vertical shaft 46, mounted upon the front ofthe frame is connected at its lower end to a suitable steering knuckle, and its omy of time and labor.
upper end is geared to a horizontalshaft 47, whose rear end is provided with a steeringI wheel 48, adjacent to the drivers seat.
he operation of the foregoing mechanism is apparent from the descriptive matter, but particular attention is called to the possibilities of adjustment whereby materials of various grades may be successfully fed out of the hopper anddistributed, and furthermore, the rate. of feed may also be regulated, thus a primary adjustment of the device consists in, so spacing the lip 10, of the plate 8 from'the periphery of the roller 11, that the material which is connecessary, and, obviously, for feeding larger 7 sizes of stone or gravel still wider ranges of adjustment will be required. The ribs 41 and 42, as the roller 11 revolves, throw the material off of the lip 10 of the plate 8, the ribs 42 giving a slight lateral direction to the material as it leaves the roller, so that it will be spread to the propertransverse limits. 7 v
The cutofl gate 12, is employedto regulate the quantity of material which may descend to the roller and obviously may be regulated at will by means of the hand wheel 25, as hereinbefore described.
It will be observed that the hopper may be positively controlled or absolutely checked by setting the gate 12; also that when its edge is spaced slightly from the plate 8 so that a vlittle material flows feed from the I downward over thelatter, the material is delivered from the lip 10 by the'movement of the ribs across suchv lip if theroller 11 is rotated; and that the rotation of'said roller is controlledby the clutch mechanism; The chain controlof the plate 8 adjusts the position of its 11p 'with'respect .to the roller,
according to the grade of material being dee upon the road surface, andan even layer of V material may be spread upon the roadfin practically any desired quantity without waste or undue loss, and with great econ- We claim The herein described feed regulator for 13 granular material comprising a hopper havswinging the said plate to adjust the posimg bottom walls converging toward a detion of its lip with respect to said roller. livery opening, a plate hinged to the lower In testimony whereof, we aflix our signaedge of one wall and extending across said tures in the presence of two witnesses.
