I UNITED STATES PATENT GEORGE vrs, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN, AssIGNoE, BYMEsNE ASSIGNMENTS, To
BROWN-MCLAEEN MANUFACTURING oo., oE DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CoEroEA- TIoN 0E MICHIGAN.
, VALVE.
Specification of -Letters Patent. f Patented June 1920 Application led May 24, 1,919. vSerial No. 299,663.
To all whom t may concern: f
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. Vis, ak citi- Zen of the United States,.residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State offMichigan,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valves, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescrip.- tion of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it .pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form details of construction hereinafter described i and claimed, it beingv understood that changes may be made in the precise embodiment herein shown without departing from the spirit of the invention. D
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this speciication:-
Figure l is a vertical cross-sectional view v of the priming cup embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a pet cock withV parts in section showing the invention applied thereto.
Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings f y A, denotes the body portion of priming cup, pet-cock or vthe like, provided with a longitudinal passage B, controlledby atapering valve Cg-inturn formed with the usual transverse port D. j
E, is a stem projecting from theV contracted end of the valve and integral therewith, on which is sleeved a washer F, bearindicates a cap snugly fitted to the outer end of the valve stem, having ankenlarged annular portion overlapping the edge of the washer. j f n II, indicates a handle for manually rotating the valve, extending through the cap i and stem, therebyy serving Itol secure these parts together as a unit. n .j
I, designates a spiral spring mounted upon the valve stem, Within the enlarged portion of the cap ;lone end of the spring bearing against the wall of the cap and the other end of the spring bearing against the washer, whereby. the valve may be maintained snugly incased'within the tapering socket of Y its rbody portion.
Itwill'now be seen that by mounting the Loperating handle on the stem of the valve which Vsupports thespring and its inclosing cap, that the stock usually provided at the opposite end of the valve to receive the handle may be eliminated, while the valve handle serves .the dual purpose of operating the valve, and to secure the spring inclosing cap to its stem.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is :-l
l. In a device of the character described, a body portion having a tapering socket to receive a valve, a tapering valve fitted `to said socket having a stem projecting from kits contracted end to receive a spring, a spring sleeved upon the valve stem adapted to maintain the valve snugly incased in the tapering socket ofthe body portion, a cap iitted to the end of the stem, having an enlarged vannular portion overlapping the spring and forming a shoulder avainst which'the outer end of said spring is adnapted to bear, the wall of said cap beyond said shoulder being provided with a slot, an operating handle extending through said slot and said valve stem to permit operation of said valve, said handle also serving as means for maintaining said cap 1n position and causing saidspring to eXert pressure on said valve. Y
2. In a device of the character described, a body portion having a tapering socket to receive a valve, a tapering valve fitted tosaid socket, having only one stem which projects from the' contracted end of the valve and is integral therewith, a spiral spring sleevedupon the stem` adapted to maintain the valve snugly fitted within the Socket of the body portion, a cap fitted to the end Vof the valve stem, having an enlarged annular portion adapted to receive the spring and forming a shoulder against rwhich the outer end of said spring is adapted to bear, the wall of said Cap beyond said shoulder being provided with a slot7 an oper.
atin handle extending through said slot and b t: y
said valve stem to permit operation of said valve, said handle also serving as means for maintaining said cap in position and Causing said spring to eXert pressure on said valve. i
3. In a device of the character described, a body7 portion having atapering socket to receive a valve, a tapering valve litt-ed to said socket, having a steni projecting from its contracted end, a Washer sleeved Von the stem and located contiguous to the Wall of the body portion, a Cap fitted to the end of the valve stern, having an enlarged annular por tion overlapping the edge of the Washer and adapted to house a spring, a spiral spring sleeved `on the valve stern Within the enlarged annular portion of the cap, having one` end bearing upon the Washer and the other end bearing against the Wall of the cap, whereby the valve may be snugly lfitted Within the socket of the Vbody poration and yforming a shoulder against which the outer end of said spring is adapted to bear, the Wall of said cap beyond said shoulder being provided with a slot1 an operating handle extending through said slot and saidvalvel `stern to permit. operation of said valve, said EDWIN R.
