Description

W. TURNBULL. GOVERNOR CONTROLLED THROTTLE VALVE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT- I 1917.
Patented June 22, 1920;
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES; PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM TURNBULL, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGIIOR TO THE HOLT MANUFACTUR- ING- COMI?ANY, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA. 1
GOVERNOR-CONTROLLED THROTTLE-VALVE.
. In the ordinary governor controlled but-- terfly throttlevalve the action of the suction from the engine creates a tendency on the part of the valve when closed to remain closed until the suction resistance is overcome and then to open suddenly. This sume is exemplified in the following dee scription and illustrated in. the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of an engine fitted with a governor controlled throttle valve embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 shows a sectional-view of the throttle valve. J
The throttle valve. here shown is preferably in the form' of a weighted puppetvalveA, mounted on a stem upper end in a spider C and having a beveled seat D from which the valve 0 ens in a direction toward the engine. Pre erably, the valve is arranged in the intake; of the manifold E. The throttle valve is connected with the governor F in such a way that the.
governor springs,'or the normal action of the governor over-balances the weight of v the valve and holds the latter open.
In operation, as the speed of the engine increases and the weights G on the governor fly outwardly, the valve is correspondingly closed. The actuating connections as shown herein embody a shaft H having one arm I jointed to the lower end of the valve stem 7 Band anotherarm J connected by a link K to governo am L; pivotel at M and guided at its- Specification of Letters Patent. Pat t J n 22, 1920 Application filed September 1, 1917. Serial No. 189,403. I
normally held inwardly at its upper end by means of a spring N. When the speed of the engine increases, the governor balls Gr, acting through suitable leven arms, draw the lower end of lever L inwardly against the action of spring N.
Various changes in construction and arrangement of the several parts herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as disclosed in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent r I r 1. In an internal combustion: engine, a throttle valve tending normally to seat by reason of gravity and acted upon by suction from the engine to tendflto open, and a. governor for controlling said valve arranged so that the normal load on the gov-.
ernor over-balances the weight of the valve and holds the latter open, further opening being assisted by suction, and closing of the same being assisted by gravity.
2. A governor controlled throttle valve for internal combustion engines, comprising a weighted puppet-valve movable vertically,
and a beveled seat below for'said valve formedin the intake manifold, said valve by reason of its weight tending normally to close, and being actuated by suction from the engine in a direction to produce a tendency to open, and a governor operatively connected to said valve in such manner that the normal load on the governor over-balances the weight of the valve and holds said valve open.
' 3. A governor controlled throttle valve for internal combustion engines, comprisduce a tendency to open, and a governor operatively connected to said-valve in such manner'that the normal load on the governor over-balances the weight of the .valve and "holds said valve open, said operative connections including a shaft having an arm linked to the lower end of the stem" of the valve, a second arm on the shaft, a
link connected to said second arm, and a governor armto which said link is conwhereby on an increase of engine speed witnesses.
beyond a predetermined point the governor operates correspondingly to close'the valve. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two'subscribing WILLIAM TUBNBULL.
