SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-STOVES.
Specification of Letters Batent.

To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, HERMINE BAEHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Gas-Stoves; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a safety attachment for gas stoves and has for one of its objects the provision ofa device of this character, whereby the valves in a gas feed pipe may be either locked open or closed, and whereby any number of valves may be locked in an open position and any number may be locked in a closed position, thus preventing the accidental opening or closing of any of the valves.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a locking member pivotally connected to the gas feed pipe of a stove and adapted to receive the handles of the valves that control the gas to the burners so that the valves may be locked either in a closed or open position.
A further object of this invention is the provision of means for adjusting the looking member so as to accommodate various numbers of valves or handles thereof.
A f urther object of this invention is the provision of means for locking the locking member into engagement with the handles of the valves to prevent the locking member from becoming accidentally disengaged from the handles of the valves.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of safety attachment for gas stoves of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and whichmay be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the inventi 1 consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a gas feed pipe of a stove and which usually extends parallel with the front edge of the stove. The feed pipe 1 has connected thereto, a plurality of valves 2, which are in turn connected to the usual burners of the stove (not shown). The valves 2 have handles 3 for opening and closing them so as to control the flow of gas to the burners of the stove. The foregoing relates to a well known construction of gas stove and to which my invention is applied.
A substantially U-shaped clamp 4 is secured to one end of the feed pipe 1 by a bolt 5. One arm portion of the clamp 4 is of greater length than the other and has secured thereto, a rivet 6, on which is slidably mounted, a bracket 7. The bracket 7 has one end disposed at right angles and pivoted to a link 8. The link 8 is normally disposed vertically and haspivotally connected thereto, a substantially U-shaped clamp 9, which is disposed in a plane above the feed pipe 1 as clearly, shownin Fig. 3.
A substantially semi-cylindrical locking member 10 consists of sections 11 and 12 and the section 12 is pivotally connected to the substantially U-shaped clamp 9 by a bolt 13 at one d thereof and is provided adjacent its other end with elongated slots 14 to re ceive lugs 15 formed upon the section 11, which section is of a smaller diameter than the section 12 so that the same may slide freely within the section 12 providing an adjustment to the locking member 10. WVhen the handles 3 of the valves 2 extend parallel with the feed pipe 1, the valves are in a closed position and by swinging the locking member 10 downwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2 it receives the valve 'handles in this position, thus the handles will be prevented from being moved to an open position, thereby preventing the accidental turning on of the gas on to the burners. The locking member 10 is provided with a plurality of notches 16 to receive the handles 3 of the valves 2 when in an open position, thus permitting the valves to be locked in an open position.
The ends of the locking member 10 are closed by end walls and adjacent the free end said locking member is slidably mounted a locking member 17, which is provided with a cut away portion 18 to engage the stem and handle of one of the valves for locking ,the locking member 10 into engage ment with the valve. The locking member 17 is urged in the direction of the valves by means of a coiled spring 19.
In operation, when it is desired to lock the valves in a closed position, the member 10 is swung up and the handles 3 are turned to extend parallel with the feed pipe 1. The locking member 10 is then swung downwardly over the handles and the locking member 17 moves into engagement with the stem of one of the valves and holds said locking member against movement, thus preventing the handles from being moved to open the valves. If for any reason one of the valves is desired to be left open and locked in thi position, the handle 3 of the respective valve is swung so as to overlie the feed pipe and extends through one of the notches 16 of the locking member 10, and when in this position, said valve is prevented from being moved from an open position to a closed position.

which can be readily and conveniently applied to the valves of the stove when desired and which can beswung out of the way ture in presence of when not desiring to lock the valves open or closed.
7 Referring to my modified form of invention, it consists of a locking member 20, which is of substantially U-shape formation in cross section and provided with a plurality of notches 21 to receive the handles of the valves upon the gas feed pipe when they are in an open position. A substantially U-shaped clamp 22 is secured to one end of the locking member 20 by means of a bolt 23 and has secured thereto, a chain 24. The
the usual catch 28 similar in construction to the catch 17 of my preferred form of invention and which is adapted to engage the outermost valve of the feed pipe for holding the locking member 20 into engagement with the valves.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing fromthe spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A safety attachment comprising a semicylindrical locking member, means pivotally and detachably securing one end of the locking member to a stove, said locking member capable of being positioned to receive within the same the handles of the gas controlling valves of the stove, said locking member having notches in one edge thereof to permit the handles to project out of the same, and a spring pressed locking element in the other end of the locking member and adapted to engage one of the valves.
