To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVING A. PRYDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrlco and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in closures especially adapted for use in connection with liquid containers, though not restricted to such use.
An important object of this invention is to provide a receptacle cover having novel means whereby the liquid discharge and air inlet openings of the same may be readily and conveniently opened for dispensing the contents of the receptacle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a receptacle having novel means for rotatably mounting a closure plate upon the top of the receptacle whereby the use centrally arranged pivot extending through the closure and the top of the receptacle may be dispensed with.
A further object of the invention is to provide a can closure which is simple, eflicient in use, and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of themvention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodL ment of the invention, the numeral generally designates a cylindrical container adapted for the'reception of condensed milk, syrups, or other liquids. The inventive idea, however, may be carried out in other containers adapted for the reception of granular articles, etc.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, a top 11 is mountview of the closure aped upon the container 10 and is provided with a depending annular flange 12' soldered,
or otherwise secured, to the outer side of the container 10 during the manufacture of the same. A filling plug 13 is inserted in the central portion of the top 11 and is engaged by a depending annular flange 14.
The filling plug 13 is adapted to be inserted in the centrally arranged opening in the top and secured within the same after the container 10 has been filled. The filling plug 13 is provided with an annular flange 15 which is approximately L-shaped in cross section, and is in engagement with the depending flange 14 of the top of the can. The upper portion 16 of the annular flange 15 is inclined downwardly and outwardly is the adjacent portion of the top 11 for presenting a comparatively uniform surface for rotatably supporting a closure device generally designated by the numeral 17.
The closure device 17 includes a centrally arranged head 18 of disk formation and a pair of diametrically opposed arms 19 adapted to be flatly mounted upon the top 11. The inner end portions of the arms 19 are bent downwardly as indicated at 20 for positioning the disk 18 within the recesses of the filling plug 13. The horizontal portion 16 of the annular flange 15 is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed lugs 21 adapted to be bent upon the annular flange 15 in U-shaped formation for forming a retaining element for the closure 17. As illustrated in Fig. 1 the lugs 21 are provided with-horizontally extending arms 22 which are arranged upwardly from the bottom of the filling plug and frictionally engage the top of the disk 18. It will be noted also that the lugs 21 form stop elements for limiting the rotation of the closure 17. The end portions of the arms 19 are adapted to be arranged over liquid discharge and air inlet openings 23 and 24 respectively formed by punching weakened portions 25 through the top ofthe can. The arm 19 which eX- tends over the air inlet opening 24 is provided with an upstanding manipulating finger 26 adapted to be manually engaged for operating the closure. hen the device is assembled, however, the manipulating element 26 is arranged in facial abutment with the top of the can so that no objectionable obstructions will be present.
In assembling the can, the top 11 is first applied and the can is subsequently filled with the desired article. The filling plug 13 is then applied for forming a pivot for the closure 17. The lugs 21 are now bent over upon the disk 18 to hold the same in place and to limit the pivotal movement of the closure. WVhen it is desired to dispense the contents of the can, weakened portions may be pressed through the top of the can after the arms 19 have been moved to a point spaced from the weakened portions 25. WVhen it is desired to again close the device, the arms 19 may be arranged over the openings 23 and 24 and all insects and dirt will be prevented from entering the can through the openings 23 and 24. It will be noted that the closure 17 is not secured to the top by a pivot element which extends entirely through the top and therefore leakage through the top is eliminated.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain within the spiritof the invention and the scope of what is claimed. 7
Having thus described the what is claimed is: i
1. A device of the class described includ ing a body having inlet and outlet openings, a closure rotatably carried by the body and provided with a pair of diametrically opposed arms adapted for closing said openings, and a pair of lugs overhanging said closure for securing the same in position.
2. A receptacle including a top having inlet and outlet openings, a plug arranged centrally upon the top, a disk; mounted upon said plug, diametrically opposed arms carried by said disk and adapted for closing said openings, and lugs carried by said plug and overhanging said disk for securing the same in position. v
3. A receptacle including atop having inlet and outlet openings and provided with invention,
disk rotatably mounted upon and in facial abutment with said plug,.arms carried by said disk and adapted for closing said openings, said arms having their inner end portions bent downwardly and in engagement with the annular flange of said plug, and overhanging lugs carried by the flange of said plug and engaging the top of said disk for securing the same in position.

A device of the class described including a body having a plurality of openings, a plug carried by said body and having an annulan flange engaging the -body, a disk mounted upon said plug and provided with arms adapted for closing said open ings, a pair of diametrically opposed lugs carried by the flange of, said plug and overhanging said disk to limit the rotation of said arms andto secure said disk in position, and a manipulating element carried by one of said arms.
5. A receptacle including a tophaving a centrally arranged opening provided with depending sides, a filling plug arranged in said centrally arranged opening and hai ing an annular flange engaging the depending side of said opening, said annular flange being L-shaped in cross section, a disk flatly engaging said closure plug and provided with a plurality of arms, the inner end portions of said arms being bent at right angles to engage the annular flange of said plug, the adjacent portion of said top being bent downwardly for presenting a uniform surface to said arms, the said top being provided with a pluralityof openings adapted to be closed by said arms, and lugs carried by the annular flange of said plug and engaging the top of said disk. 7
