T all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MOSES AFRANEL, a citizen of Russia, and resident of New York city, in the county of Kings and. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BrushHolders, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and efiicient holder for paint brushes and other articles, adapted to be fitted upon the edge of a receptacle, and to clamp the handle of the brush to sustain it, whereby the bristles of the brush can depend into water in the receptacle and the bristles will be kept from resting upon the bottom of the receptacle.

' My invention comprises novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.

My improved brush holder may be made from a single piece of wire to provide a stem 1 having a gripping loop 2 at the lower end to receive the side of a receptacle or pail 3, the lower end of the loop having a transverse member or foot piece 4 to bear against the side of the receptacle to retain the holder from turning thereon. At the upper end of the stem is a clamping jaw 5 to receive and grip the handle of the brush 6, finger pieces 7 extending rearwardly from a-coil 8 serving to permit operation to spread the jaw members. In the example illustrated the holder is made of a continuous wire as follows The wire is shaped to provide the member 4 and provided with a bend at 9, the wire extending over member 4 at 10 and being bent at 11 and extended upwardly at 12 and reversely at 13, providing the loop 2. The wire is bent at 14,and extended upwardly at 15 substantially parallel with part 13. The

at 17 bent at 18 and extended below part 17 and beyond part 15 at 19*, the parts 19, 19 being continuous. The wire is again bent at 20 and extended at 21 over the part 19,

7 part 24, the parts 24 and 24 being continuous. the end of part 24 the wire is bent at 25 (1* 1g. 1) and extended at 26 above part 24 toward the coil. At 27 the wire is bent (outside of the coil) and extended at 28 along the part 15 where the parts 15 and 28 are twisted together at 29, providing a rigid stem '1. The parts 17, 19 on one side and the parts 26, 24 spaced therefrom on the other side provide the clamping jaw 5, with the coil 8 lnterposed, and the parts 21, 19 on one side and the parts 22, 24'spaced therefrom on the other side provide the spaced finger pieces 7.

The resiliency of the coil maintains the clamping aw members pressed together to' clamp the brush handle and the finger piece members spread (Fig. 4.)

When my improved holder is to he used the loop 2 is fitted upon the margin of pail orreceptacle 3 to grip the same to retain the clamping jaw upwardly and inwardly extended, the foot piece bearing against the Wall. The clamping jaw will extend inwardly a suitable distance over the pail and the finger pieces will be outwardly and may be gripped and squeezed to spread the clamping jaw members to receive the brush handle and when released the coil will force the clamping jaw members against the brush handle, whereby the brush bristles will be sustained in the water in the pail with the bristles out of contact with the pail. The respective pairs of upper and lower parts 17, 19 and 26, 24, being spaced apart as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, grip the handle evenly on opposite sides to maintain the brush hanging properly in the pail.

My improved holder is simple and cheap to manufacture, may be readily applied to and removed from a receptacle, and is effective to sustain an article therein. While I have referred to supporting paint brushes with my improved holder it willbe understood that it may be adapted to sustain other articles in a like manner.

Changes may be made in the particular manner described of bending and extending the parts of the wire, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having now described my invention what I claim is l. A holder comprising a stem having sup porting means at one end continued into a coil atthe other end, spaced clamping jaws extending from opposite edges of the coil on one side and spaced finger pieces extending from corresponding edges of the coil on the other side thereof, said clamping jaws and finger pieces extending substantially at right angles to said stem.

A holder comprising a wire having a stem provided with supporting means at one end, said Wire being extended continuously from the stem to form a clamping jaw member and a finger piece and having a transverse coil continued one side thereof, said Wire on the other side of the coil being extended to form a clamping jaw member spaced from the first named jaw. member and a finger piece spaced from the other finger piece.

A holder comprising a continuous wire having a stem portion provided with supporting means, a jaw member and a finger piece each having two parts of the Wire bent reversely at opposite ends, the wire being coiled at one side of said member and finger piece, said wire continuing from said coil in a aw member and a finger piece each having two parts of the Wire bent reversely at opposite ends and respectively spaced from the first named jaw member and finger piece.

4:. A holder comprising a continuous wire having a stem portion provided with a loop at one end, the wire at the opposite end of the stem being extended laterally and having a bend and extending substantially parallel with said extended part, the wire having a bend and extended reversely a distance and coiled, the wire extending from the coil and having a bend and extended to another bend whence the wire extends to one side of said coil and has a bend providing an end portion twisted together with said stem.
