V BAFFLE PLATE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 7, 1920.

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE},
-EDWARD THOMAS PERRY, 0F DETROIT, MICI-ITG AN, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF. T O HENRY 1VL WIEGALND, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IB AFFLE-PLATE.
Application filed January 7,1920. Serial No. 349,995.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. FERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Baflle-Plate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bafile plates to be employed in connection with engine cylinders for restricting the quantity of lubricating o1l entering the cylinders, thus preventing the flooding of the cylinders to the end that any possibility of the engine smoking as a result of burning excess oil, is absolutely eliminated.
An object of this invention is to provide a baffle plate having means to permit oil to pass from the cylinders into the crank case of the engine, in the event that too great a quantity of oil enters the cylinders.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device 'of this character which may be readily and easily attached to engine cylinders now in use, and one which will prevent oil from finding its' way between the bafiie plate and the cylinder to which the same is applied.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a fragmental sectional view through a cylinder having the device applied thereto,
Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3, and e .7
Fig. 3-illustrates a plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the body of the plate which is formed of any suitable metal, the same being preferably circular in formation, and of a diameter to properly fit adjacent the open end of an engine cylinder.
As shown, the plate includes a concaved body portion indicated at 6, providing an oil receiving pan which is provided with a cen- Specification 'of Letters Batent.
Patented June 15, 1920.
trall'slotted' portion '7, the slot being of a width to accommodate the usual piston rod,
- to permit the same to operate in the cylinder to which the device forming the subject matter of the invention is applied.
Relatively long inwardly extending flanges 8, form the walls of the slotted'portion 7 the flanges 8 lying in spaced relation wlth each other, and in positions to permit the operation of the piston rod therebetween.
An outer ring 9 is secured to the side walls of the bafiie plate, the same being of a width equal to the side walls of the baflle plate, and are provided with an annular shoulder 10, formed by the offset portion 11 of the ring 9, which shoulder is constructed to support the packing ring 12 which packing rlng is provided for closely engaging the outer edge of the block in which the cylinder supplied with the bafile plate, is formed, thereby preventing the passage of. oil bellween the baffle plate and the engine cylin- Laterally extending ears 18 are formed on the ring 9, and disposed in spaced relation with each other, these ears being apertured as at 14 to receive securing bolts by means 1 of which the baffle plate may be secured to the engine cylinder to prevent displacement of the baffle plate.
Disposed in'the side walls of the body 5, are oblong openings 16, which openings permit oil to enter the body, from the sides thereof, the size of these openings 16 being governed by the amount of oil consumed by various makes of engines.
From the foregoing it is obvious that a baffle plate constructed inaccordance with the present invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with engines wherein the cylinders.
' nection Witheachisection, therflanges being disposed in spacedrelatlon With each other, v
8 preventexcess quantities of oil entering Having thus desc'i'ibed the invention,
what I claim as new is V In Combination With theopen e'ndof an engine cylinder, a bafiie plate for substan L tiallyclosing the open end. of the cylinder,
the baflle plate having a sectional bottom,
each section being 'concaved, a vrelatively long inwardly extending flange haying conand the Walls of said baflle plate being provided 'With openings adjiacent the =l0wer edges thereof for permitting oil to pass EDWARD THOMAS PERRY.
