I The embodiment of the invention shownon the drawingis particularly designed to: produce a bail with the ends formed as shown in F ig. 10, which is substantially the ball of the co-pending application to which reference has been 1nade. Viewing this figure itwill be noted that the ends of the bail 22 are looped at 23 and 24, one loop 23 being disposed substantiallyjin the plane of the .body and the other end 24; at right angles thereto. Theterminal ends 25 and 26 are bent at right angles tothe planes ofthe loops so that 'one end25. is disposed at right angles to the plane of the body of: the bail and the other end 26 in this plane. f It is intended that when the bail is assembled, both loops will bedisposed in;
the plane of the body, and this is attained by bending the loop '24 at right angles about the point 27 of its connection with the body of the bail.

the invention and shown on the drawings is adapted to operate upon the bails after the body of thebail has been given itsdesired curvature and the ends brought to extend in the samegeneral direction. It will be understood that the variousdies and forming members and their associated actuating instrumentalities are all timed by cams on the cam shaft to operate in synchronism upon the ends of the incompleted bail thus positioned. The bail is thrust across the two guide bars 44 which are preferably flush with the top of the bed and beneath a holding yoke 45, having two laterally extending arms 46, and
carried upon the end' of a lever 47 which is fulcrumed at 48 onthe bed and carries at its rear end a roller 49 whichengages a I central cam 51 on the cam shaft. This holding lever is the first operativepart of the machine to come into action aftera down on the ends of the bail pinning them to the table as maybe seen by viewing Fig. 1.
Two operations in the present instance are performed on each bail end. Viewing Fig.
1, the end at-the left is first given a loop in a horizontal plane and the extremity then bent up at right angles thereto. This loop is the loop 23 andit is formed by the con- 'joint action of two loop forming dies" 52 and 5 3,'these dies being shown in enlargeddetail in Figs. 16 and 18. Theyeachfconsist of a block of hard metal having slots 54 in either side for engagement with the guide bars 44 between which they reciprocate toward and from each'other under the action of the cams.
The block 52 is actuated by a cam lever 55 pivoted at 56 upon the table and having one end 57 engaging in a recess 58 in the block and the other end provided with'a roller 59 taking into a cam groove 61 of cam part 62 on the cam shaft. A similar arrangement is provided to actuate the block 53. Lever 63 is pivotedat 64 upon the table I ends 57 and 66 toward each other.

This bending member is perhaps best shown in Fig. 21 and in its action cooperates with one.v of two. horizontal reciprocating dies adapted to operate upon this end of the bail. This die in the present instance is numbered 78 and is illustrated in enlarged view in Fig.

"WhenSin position the wire extends acrossthe forward parts 81 and 82 of the member 79, said forward parts 81 and 82 providing a recess 83 between them. The adjacentfaces of the parts 81 and 8.2are' provided with slots -'84 p 7' 7' to receive the sides ofthe loop under the action of the bending member 77. This member has an operative shoulder 85 adapted to move down between the parts'81 and 82 to give the loop bend to this end of the bail. Vertical. reciprocation is imparted to the bending member 77 by a lever 86-,having one end 87 engagingin the member 77, the other end carrying a roller 88 -engagingQin' a cam groove 89 of cam part 9 1, it being understood that the bending member 7 7 slides in 'ways' 92 in'the'frame of themachine.

This -member comes up from-below after theloophas been formed and bends up-the end as may be observed by comparing Figs. 4 and 5, the pin-75 prevents the body of'the'loopfrom. bending or distortion in this step of, the'-operation. .Atsubstantially the same time the end 26 is formed by the die 78 and its companion 113.1also slidable in guideways 14, the die 113 is shown enlarged in Fig. 20 from which it will be noted that it also .is provided with slots 114 for engagement with the guide bars 44. The die 78 is recessed at 115 back of the position of the loop and the upper surface of the recess is provided with a bail end receiving depression1161 The die 113 carries a nose 117 adapted to slide over the projection 82 and into the recess 115 bending down the end 26 as may be seen by comparing Figs. 4 and 5. Dle 113 receives its movement from lever 118 pivoted at 119 on the lpled andhaving an arm 121 engaging in the 1e. a roller 123 taking into cam slot 124 of cam part 125.
The cams are so timed that these operations occur in quick succession and after they are completed the holding armsare elevated to permit, the finished bail to be removed and another inserted.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be under stood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or,
sacrificing most of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A machine for forming bail ends, comprising in combination loop forming dies movable in the plane of the body of the bail, a loop forming die movable transversely to said plane, and end bending dies one movable at right angles to said plane and the other movable in said plane.
2. A machine for forming bail ends, eomprisingin combination two pairs of loop forming dies arranged to operate in planes at right angles to each other, and two end bending dies one operating in one of said planes and the other operating in the other of said planes. 7

In a bail forming machine the combinatlon of a pair of dies one of wh1ch 1s movable toward the other in the plane of the bail, said, dies being shaped to grasp an end of the bail and produce a loop therein in the plane of the bail, a third die movable transversely to said plane and, shaped to bend the terminal portion ofthe bail transversely to said loop, a second pair of dies one of which is movable toward the other, said dies having portions which engage the bail near the end thereof at opposite sides of the said plane, one of said dies being movable trans- The other arm of the lever 118 carries versely to said plane and adapted to bend said portionof the bail into a loop extending'transversely to said plane, a sixth die movable parallel with said plane to bend the other terminal portion of the bail into position in said plane and toward the first mentioned end ofthe bail,'and mechanism for actuating said dies.

A machinefor forming bail ends, comprising in combination devices for clamping the body of the bail near its end, a hook member adapted to engage over the end of said bail and movableto form a loop therein, and a sliding die for bending the end of said loop angularly with respect to the body of the loop.
5. A machine for forming bail ends, comprising in combination a clamping device for holding the bail during the end forming,
loop forming dies and" end forming dies operative during the holding of said bail on one ,leg of the same, a second set of loop forming dies operating on the other leg of the bail at right angles to the; first set, and a second end forming .die operating at right angles tothe first end forming die."
6. A machine for forming bail ends,- com prising in combination two sets of male and female reciprocating dies movable toward each other-to form loops adjacent the ends of the bail, the dies of one set operating at right angles to those of the other set, and subsequently acting vertically movable dies for bending the ends of said bail angularly,
with respect to said loops, said end bending dies operating at right angles to each other.
7. A machine for forming bail ends,,com-- pr1s1ng 1n combinatlon a holdlng device for engaging both sides of the bail near its ends, loop forming dies for forming loops in the ends of the bails disposed at right angles to each other, and end formingdies for bending the ends of said bail angularly with respect to said loops. 2
8. A'machine for forming bail ends, comprising in combination holding device for engaging both sides of the ball near its ends,
loop forming dies for forming loops inthe ends of the bails disposed at right angles to each other, and end forming dies forbending the ends of said bail angularly with respect to said loops, and a common cam control for said dies and said holding device.
