istante.
Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented d une 5, 192W.
Application iled September 22, 1911. Serial No. 650,751.
T 0 all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, RAPHAEL J. Mooi,- TEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Sanitary Mouth and Lip Protector, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a sanitary mouth and lip protector for use on dental hand pieces.
As is well recognized by the dental profession, the hand pieces of dental tools are particularly exposed to infection, and it is not practicable to thoroughly sterilize them because of the fact that the sterilizing agents act so detrimentally on the lubricant necessarily employed on such hand pieces. Accordingly, dentists are weli aware of the danger of transmitting various diseases from one patient to another by bacterial infection occasioned by bacteria carried by dental hand pieces.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, I make the protector out of paper, thin card board, or papier mch, of one character or another, and said material may be oiled, paraflined, water-proofed, medicated or otherwise treated to be especially adapted for its particular use. When thus made out of paper, it isadapted for temporary use, only, a new protector being used for each patient.
Other features of construction and advantages of the invention, other than those adverted to, will be apparent from the hereinafter detailed description of the invention taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated different practical embodiments of the invention, but the constructions shown therein are to be understood as illustrative, only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.
Figure 1 shows a hand piece and drill in elevation with the dental shield in section positioned thereon;
Fig 2 shows one form of the detached shield. in perspective;
Fig. 8 shows a hand piece having a drill mounted at right angles therein, and a two part shield, partly in cross section and partly in elevation, positioned thereon;
Fig. 4 shows in elevation substantially the same construction as that shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a rear end view in elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 4, and
Referring to Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, A is the dental hand piece, B the tool, in this instance a drill, positioned in alinement with the hand piece, and C the sanitary protector or shield adapted to slip over and fit on the hand piece, said shield having an opening, a, in the bottom thereof through which the drill B extends, this opening being of suiiicient size to allow the tool to operate without contacting with the walls of the shield.
In Figs. 3 to 6, which show a tool mounted in the hand piece and at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said piece, A is the hand piece, the protecting shield positioned thereon being composed of two, preferably overlapping, members C', C', provided with means for locking them together so as to retain them on the hand piece. In the construction shown, one member is pijovided with slits and the other with tongues c, adapted to enter and coperate with said slits, whereby the members C, C may be locked together on the hand piece. The drill is shown at B.
It will be apparent that the shield must be conformed to fit the particular hand piece, and may be made in one or more pieces depending on the shape of the hand piece and the tool to be employed therein. While the shield is shown as applied to hand pieces wherein drills are used, it will be manifest that it is equally applicable to hand pieces used for pluggers, burs, etc.
It will be manifest, moreover, that the protector may be applied to dental instruments, generally, which come in contact with the mouth and lips, and of the shape and style mentioned, and, also, to certain types of mallets which are not employed in connection with a hand piece.
I-Iaving thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a device of the class described, a sanitary mouth and lip protector made to fit over that portion Q a dental hand-piece other and having an opening therein through which an operating tool, may eX- tend. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specication in the presence of tvvo subscribing Witnesses.
*,RAPHAEL J. MOOLTEN.
