PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. GRIFFIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ASH-TRAY.
Application flied my 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I JOHN P. GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United tates, residin at New York cit in the county of New Y ork and State of ew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ash-Trays, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ash trays and has for its ob'ect the provision of an ash tray particular y adapted for the use of cigarette smokers and provided with means whereby a burning cigarette stump will be extinguished when placed within the ash tray, whereby the objectionable continued burning of the stump will be prevented and whereby danger of fire and the like from carelessness will be eliminated.
is the provision of an ash tray of this character which is so formed as to provide means whereby a burning stump will be smothered and which is also so constructed that the ashes upon the stump will fall into a receptacle for avoiding clogging of the smothering or extinguishing spaces.
An additional object is the provision of an ash tray of this character which will be very in manufacture, durable in service, and which may be readily disassembled for cleaning.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinaftermore fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of an ash tray constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion thereof being broken away and in section, and
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view.
Referring more [mrticularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates the base of the device which is preferably circular and dish shape, and refer-ably provided with a glass lining 11. he member 10 ma be provided with any suitable pedestal w ereby it may be supported from the floor or table, or anjys other article of furniture.
isposed within the base 10, or within the lining 11 if the base is so equipped, is a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1920.
1919. Serial No. 800,020.
In the use of the device it will be seen that in order to extinguish a smoldering cigarette stump it is merely necessary that the operator place the stump within any one passages 15 and press toward the center of the body '12, whereby the lighted end will be engaged within the opening 16 at the end of the particular passage 15, whereby the ashes upon the end of the stump will fall off the stump and into the central openin 17, it being apparent that engagement 0 the stump within the opening 16 will choke or smother the fire so that the cigarette, will be effectually extinguished.
While the device is shown and described as reduced to its simplest form, it will be readily'understood that the design may be greatly elaborated upon so that the device may have an extremely attractive appearance, it being of course understood that all such changes, as well as the changes in construction may be resorted to to a degree which will not depart from the scope of the suliiloined claim.
aving thus described my invention, I claim An ash tray comprising abase receptacle having upwardly curved sides merging into the bottom thereof, a glass lining conformingly engaging within'said base receptacle, and a body conformingly engaged within said lining and projecting above the top of the side flanges thereof, said body being provided centrally with an opening extendof the ing to said lining and terminating short of the top of the body whereby the top of the opening will be closed, said body being somewhat stella form whereby to provide a pin- 5 rulity of points engaging the inner periphery of the lining, the periphery of said body between said points being spaced from the lining to provide recesses, and said body heinn (Provided between said points with outwer 1y flaring recesses communicating with 10 said opening.
In testimony whereof I eflix my signature.
JOHN P. GRIFFIN.
