YOKE FOR RAILWAY-CARS.

To all 'u1/wm t may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT L. SPENGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Yokes for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Iiigure l is an elevation of a yoke embodying my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan thereof.
My invention relates to yokes for railway cars, and consists in providing a yoke with a removable lower arm, so that the coupler may easily be assembled with the yoke, ready access may be had to the draft rigging, and the coupler and draft rigging may be removed separately, without disturbing the position of the upper arm or main portion of the yoke on the car. My invention also consists in the construction and cooperation of the parts which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring to the drawings, the upper arm 2 of the yoke terminates at its rear end in a vertical downwardly extending portion 3, and at its forward end in the depending webs 4. The vertical rear portion 3 of the upper arm 2 has at its lower end a reduced extension 5. The lower yoke arm 6 has, at its rear end, an aperture 7 extending vertically through it for reception of the eXtension 5, and both the extension 5 and the arm 6 have registering horizontal openings for the pin 8 which supports the rear end of the lower arm when in assembled position. The opening in the extension 5 for the pin 8 is elongated in a horizontal direction so that the pin 8 is freed from any stresses other than those due to the weight of the parts.
The forward end of the lower yoke arm is of T-shape, and the inner faces of the arms 9 of the T are adapted to enter horizontal slots 10 in the' forward faces of the webs.
After the coupler and draft rigging parts (not shown) have been placed in position in the upper yoke arm 2, the lower yoke arm 6 is applied by a rearward movement so as to bring the arms 9 of the T into position in the slots 10, so that the forward end of the yoke arm 6 is not only supported in the slots 10, but its arms also engage the outer faces of the webs 4c and thereby prevent spreading. Sufficient clearance is provided at a in the slots 10 so that when the forward end of the lower yoke arm 6 is supported in the slots, its rear end may depend below the extension 5. The rear end is then lifted and the extension 5 projects down through the aperture 7 therein. The pin 8 is next passed throughthe horizontal openings in the eX- tension and lower yoke arm, which have beenvbrought into register, and is held in place by a cotter, thus completing the assembling of the device.
It will be seen that the pulling stresses are transmitted from the coupler butt to the yoke arms through the inwardly turned gibs l1, l1 and from the upper arm directly to the vertical portion 3 and from the lower arm through the reduced extension to the said vertical portion.
In removing the lower arm the pin S is first withdrawn, which permits the rear end of the arm to drop down below, and clear of, the extension 5, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. l; The member 6 may then be moved forwardly to disengage its forward end from the webs 4 and coupler butt.
The terms and expressions which I have employed are used as terms of description and not of limitation, and I have no intention, in the use of such terms and expressions, of excluding any mechanical equivalents of the features shown and described, or portions thereof, but recognize that various modifications are possible within the scope of the invention claimed.
Vhat I claim is:
1. In a coupler yoke. an upper yoke arm having at its forward end a plurality of depending webs and at its rear end a depending vertical portion, a lower yoke arm having at its forward end an interlocking engagement with the webs and apertured at its rear end to take about the lower end of the vertical portion to provide a pulling engagement therewith.
2. In a coupler yoke, an upper yoke arm having at its forward end a plurality of depending webs and at its rear end a depending vertical portion, the vertical portion having a reduced extension, a lower yoke arm having at its forward end a supporting engagement with said webs and at its rear end being apertured to take about said reduced extension to provide a pulling engagement therewith.
3. In a coupler yoke, an upper yoke arm having at its forward end a plurality of depending webs and at its rear end a depending vertioal portion, the vertical portion having a reduced extension7 and a lower yoke arm having at its rear end an interlocking pulling engagement with said reduced eX- tension, the depending webs on the upper yoke arm carrying means for supporting the forward end of the lower yoke arm.
4L. In a coupler yoke, an upper yoke arm having at its rear end a depending vertical portion, a lower arm apertured to take about the lower end of the vertical portion to provide a pulling engagement therewith, each of said arms having a gib at its forward end to engage a coupler butt7 and means connecting the forward ends of said arms to hold said gibs in engagement with a coupler butt.
