To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EFREM REVEGA, a citi zen of Russia, residing at 140 Victor avenue, Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in receptacles for containing matches and mechanism for igniting them within the box.

The object of this invention is to provide a device adapted to hold, mechanically ignite,-and to retain within its structure the lighted match while lighting a cigar or cigarette.

This object is attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown by the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10, shows the outer casing of a match box, having an annular aperture 11 for the introduction of a cigar or cigarette end, and an elongated opening 12 in edge of casing for the outlet of burned matches.

A locking bar 13, having a head 14, passes slidably through the casing 10, engaging with the spring 15, designed to press the bar outwardly into normal position. A semiannular recess 16 in the lower side of the bar provides a passage for the cover retaining boss 17 to pass through when withdrawing the cover 10, the bar 13 being pressed inwardly at that time.

In the outer end of the magazine or pan 18, is a vertical elongated slot 19, shown in Fig. 3, designed to receive the ejecter screw 20.

Formed integral with one of the'lower side edges of the pan 18, is a curved ignition plate 21 having upon its convex portion,

sharply out serrations or other means of causing abrasion.

Secured to both edges of the frame 18 are slide guides 22 and 23, having the retaining hooks 24 and 25, and secured within the magazine 18, are the guide bars 38 and 39 designed to prevent other than a vertical movement of the bars 37 which support the nut 36.

The match holder, shown in Fig. 4, is comprised of a plate 26, pierced at one end by the elongated retaining slots 27 and 28 and designed to be attached to the hooks 2425 and having formed at the opposite end a downwardly turned trough-shaped receptacle 29.

Secured to the plate 26, by rivets 30 and 31, are the match holding arms 32 and 33'. An ejecting screw 20 has a disk 34 pivotally attached to its lower extremity and a head 35 designed to be hand operated formed upon its opposite end, the screw being engaged in the rectangular nut 36.

In operation, the pan 18, by a slight inward pressure, on the locking bolt 14, may be slidably removed from the outer casing 10, and the match holders 26 disengaged from the hooks 24 and 25.

The arms 32 and 33 may be swung later.- ally upon the rivets 30 and 31, thereby widening the space for introducing matches into the holders 26. Unscrewing the ejecting screw 20, to its outward limit, enables the holders 26 to be slidably returned to place, being guided by the .guides 26 and fixed in position by the hooks 24 and 25 passing through the elongated slots 27 and 28 of the elements 26.

The ejector screw nut 36 being properly adjusted with regard to the relative position of the holders 26, the screw is moved inwardly until the disk 34 presses against the match sticks 40, alining them for further advancement.

The casing 10, having the lock bolt 13 in an inward position may be slidably replaced over the pans 18 and locked by the bar element 13 when pressure on the same is released.

By reference to Fig. 1, it will be seen that further advancement of the screw 20 will force the match heads over the abrading surface 21, thereby causing ignition and allowing the lighted match to drop into the trough 29 and register with the opening 11 provided for the introduction of a cigar end.

The dropping of the burnt match through the opening provided for this purpose completes the cycle of operations and repetition may be continued until the pan is emptied.

From the foregoing it will be seen that an eflicient and practical match box has been disclosed, of simple construction and great durability.

Having thus disclosed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A match box comprising a hollow metal casing having an aperture in its cover wall and an opening in its lower wall, lateral guides disposed longitudinally in said casing, shallow pans disposed on said guides,

said pans being adapted to hold a single row of matches disposed side by side thereon, abrading elements formed with said pans at one side thereof, receivers formed at the ends of said pans, said receivers being in register with the mentioned aperture, spring arms adapted to hold the matches on said pans, a screw disposed to operate longitudinally in said casing, said screw being adjustable vertically in said casing, and means carried by said screw adapted to contact with matches in any of said pans whereby they may be forced outwardly.
