CONTAINER WITH ADJUSTABLE FALSE BOTTOM.
invented new and useful Improvements in Containers with Adjustable False Bottoms, of which the following is a speclficatlon.
Our object is to make a container such as a cigar box with an adjustable false bottom, and our invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cigar box provided with an adjustable false bottom in accordance with the principles of our invention. I
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal central sectional detail as on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 isan enlarged fragmentary sectional detail on the same plane as Fig.2.
The cigar box 1 may be any of the usual constructions. The false bottom support 2 is a sheet of cloth cut to the width of the chamber in the box and long enough 'to extend the length of the bottom and up the two ends. The false bottom support 2 is placed in position and the false bottom 3 is placed upon the support 2 and'pressed downwardly to rest upon the main bottom 4. The false bottom 3 is aboard such as the cigar box is made of cut to fit loosely upon the bottom 4. The cigars 5 are packed upon the false bottom 3 and the cover 6 closed as is usual.
When the upper layers of cigars have been sold the ends 7 and 8'of the false bottom support 2 are manually grasped to raise the false bottom 3 and the remaining cigars to the desired extent, and then the clips 9 and 10 are applied to grip the ends 7 and 8 of the false bottom support 2 to theend. boards 11 and 12 of the box and supportthe false bottom 3 and'the load of cigars upon the false bottom, and as the cigars are sold the operation may be repeated as desired, so that the cigarbox will always have the appearance of being nearly filled with cigars until the last row of pcigars is sold.
. The clips 9 and 10 are formed of 'sprin gy sheet metal. Rectangular pieces of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1920.
Application filed J'une'9, 1919. Serial No. 302,900.
sheet metal arecut to the, desired size and the metal is bent at its center to form the bows 13 and the flat gripping plates 14 and 15 extending downwardly from the bows 13, and the outturned edges 16 and 17 at the lower sides of the plates 14: and 15.
When the cloth forming the support 2 1s pulled over the edges of the end boards 11 and 12 and the clips 9 and 10 applied at the centers of the end boards, the false bottom 3 will be securely held elevated and securely held from tipping. The-width of the cloth engaging the entire width of the ends of the box will effectually hold the false bottomfrom tipping.
If desired, the cloth may be attached to the ends of the false bottom 3 instead of being laid loose, and if the cloth is attached to the ends it need' not extend under the false bottom further than is necessary for the attachment. It is obvious that the ad justable false bottom may be applied to a trunk or to any other container having practically straight ends or straight sides.
It is obvious that the false bottom support 2 may be a sheet of paper or any material which will fold over the edges of the container. I
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention as claimed.
Weclaim: r I 1. The combination with a container having straight walls, of a false bottom adapted to fit upon the 'main bottom of the conthe ends of the false bottom and adapted. to. fold over the edges of the end boards of the box,,ai1d clips adapted to embrace the upper 'edg'es of .the end boards and the I to hold the false bottom elea folded {sh vated.
