FALSE BOTTOM FOR GARBAGE-RECEPTAGLES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLAS J. JAooBssoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resldent of the city of New York, borough of Mana new and improved false bottom for garbagecans and similar receptacles used in households, hotels, restaurants and other establishments, and arranged to maintain the garbage receptacle in a sanitary condition when emptying it of its contents, especially protecting the bottom of the receptacle against adherence of moisture, fats and like matter.

In order to accomplish the desired result,

' with an upwardly extending marginal flange engaging the inner surface of the wall of the garbage receptacle.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in

which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding .parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the usual'garbage can provided with the false bottom, the section being on the line 1-1 of Fig.2; l

Fig. 3 is a plan View of the false bottom prior to inserting it into the garbage receptacle;

The false bottom 10 is made of paper or a similar cheap material and is adapted to rest on the bottom 11 of a garbage can or receptacle 12 of usual sheet metal construction. The false bottom 10 is provided with a margina'l flange formed of integral tongues 13 adapted to engage the inner-surface of the wall of the garbage can 12 to prevent any moisture or semi-fluid from passing between the false bottom 10 and the regular bottom 11 Of'llh garbage can. tically of a diameter corresponding to that rial and a new one can be placed by the householder in position in the can prior to receiving another batch of refuse material. It will be noticed that by the use of this false bottom any moisture, greases, fats orv the likeare not liable to adhere to the bottom 11 of the garbage receptacle and hence the latter is practically kept at all times in a sanitary condition.

Of course, the disk forming the false bot tom 10 is in either case of a larger diameter than the diameter of the receptacle or can 12 so that 'when the marginal edge of the disk is bent or turned upwardly, the bottom will fit properly within the can.

The tongues forming the marginal flange may be in the shape shown in Fig. 3, or in the form' shown in Figs. 4: and 5, it being understood that in the former case the adj acent edges of successive tongues 13 are spaced by cutting out V-shaped portions of the paper to allow the edges of the tongue 13 to abut when the false bottom is in position, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, while in the form shown in Fig. 4 the paper is simply provided with radial slits to allow the tongues 14 formed thereby to overlap at their adjacent edges when pushing the false bottom into the garbage receptacle.

The false bottom may be provided with a handle 15, preferably made of a strip of paper secured at its ends to' the false bottom IQ and having a portion normally folded up to permit of extending the handle into segmental shape,as indicated in dotted lines when using the handle for placing the false bottom in position in the garbage receptacle It is understood that the false bottom can he very cheaply manufactured and hence is of no great expense to the householder.

The marginal flange 13 may be extended to any desired height to practically forma lining for the interior of the receptacle.
