[rmmmmnnmmmm I INVENTOR.
ma aw/411 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. BARNAIBY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Original application filed October 28, 1916, Serial No. 128,248.
'1 b (all whom it may concern lie it known that I, (lirannns \V. BARNABY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough oi Richmond, county oi? Richmond, city and State oif New York, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in the manufacture of Multiple Bearings, of which the :t'ollowing is a specilication.
My invention relates to the 'n'lanuiiactiu'e oi. multiple bearings in which several. bearings are arranged along a curved. line, as in the type-bar l'iearings for typewriters and the like and the objects of my invention are to provide better. cheaper and more easily 1nanrrhwtured form of hearing. The present application constitutes a divisional application of my copending application, Serial No. 128.5%8. type'bar actions. filed (lctober 2d. 1916.
F igure 1 shows a straight blank, prepared in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 .is an end view of a slightly modified application of my invention to a blank similar to that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view of still another modification of a blank made in arcordance with. my invention.
Fig. ii: is a plan view oi blank similar to Fig. 1 after same has been bent into the re.- quired curved. form, a part of one end being cut away to show a section. through a lengthwise perforation.
Fig. 5 is a top view and Fig. 6 a side view o t Fig. L alter same has been slotted. trans versely, through the greater part oi? its depth.
Fig. 7 is a cross section through the base of Figs. 5 and 6 when a blank similar to F in. l. is used.
Fig. 8 is a similar cross section when the blank is of the modified form shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 9 is a similar cross section when the blank is of the modified form shown in. Fig. 23, and
llig. 1.0 is a pivot pin of suitable curved form to be inserted the full length of the bearing block, Fig. 5.
In the application of my invention to the manufacture of multiple bearings arranged along a curved line I perform certain operations upon a straight blank, bend the blank Specification of Letters Patent.
MANUFACTURE OF MULTIPLE BEARINGS.

Divided and. this application filed January Serial No. 273,866.
to the desired curvature and. then perform certain other operations.
In the carryin r out of these operations a straight blank provided oi the required sectional form, similar to that shown in Fin. .1. The blank is then pierced, endivise, by one or more holes such as l. and 2, as required, and if slots similar to 3 are required the same are out, longitudinally. in the straight blank. Through the application. oi: suitable rolls or press dies the blank is gin-an the required curved form as illustrated by Fig. at. Radial slots 4;, Figs. 5 and 6, of the required number, width and depth are then machined transversely across the curved blank. prod ucing a curved multiple bearing block such as illustrated by Figs. 5 and 6. Lobes 5. F 5, 6 and S. pierced with holes 1, arel .t standing each side of slots t to give side and. pivot support to such members, type-bars for typewriting machines. as it is desired to pivot in the bearings. The curved bearing pin, Fig. 10, is inserted through lobe pivot holes 1. Fin. 8. and through suitable pivot holes provided in the pivoted. members whereby all oi. said memhers are properly pivoted in all of the slots of the multiple bearing block.
This method of manufacture makes it easy to provide any desired contour of cross section for the blank in the straight form. to pierce the blank with a Straight pivot hole 1. to provide pockets in the l)0l)ll()1l'l of the bearing slots l by drilling: a straight hole :2 tlu'oughout the length oi. the blank to provide openings through the base of each bearing slot l by cutting; a groove 3 throu l1- out the length of the straight blank, or to pertorn'l other operations aii'ectingr the cross section contour ot the blank and providing; openings in the walls of bearing slots a l such as would. be (llllll ult to provide in a bearing block which was o'i" curved torn] from its origin to its finish.
I claim:
The method oi constructing: a curved multiple bearing. which consists of the preparation of a straight blank provided with a straight longitudinal duct. bending said blank, and transversely slotting said blank across said. duct.
