JOHN ALBERT CHAPPUIS, OF LA CHAUX-DE-FOND S, SWITZERLAND.
ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Application filed November 20, 1919. Serial 1&0. 339,377.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ALBERT CHAP- rUIs, a citizen of the Swiss Confederation, and resident of La ChauX-de-Fonds, Switzerland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of the present invention is an alarm clock in which the movement is in closed in a casing the base of which is formed by the bell of the alarm which is fixed to the movement. The feature of the invention is that the bell is formed at its central portion with a recess within which are located the winders and hand setters.
This arrangement permits of suspending the alarm from a wall as the winders and setters need not project beyond the rear edge of the alarm casing. The bell comprises preferably an outer rim connected to the central part by a flange in such manner that the sounding zone of the bell consists only of the said rim. As a result the elements for attachment of the bell, viz. screws, nuts, etc., may be located in any position on the central part of the latter without prejudicial effect on the sound or tone of the bell.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which, Figure l is a rear view of the alarm, while Fig. 2 is a section on the line 21-13 of Fig. 1, those parts not necessary for an un derstanding of the invention being omitted.
In accordance with the embodiment shown, the movement of the alarm is mounted in a frame comprising two plates a, Z), assembled by pillars c by means of nuts 0. Most of the parts of the movement are not shown,
but the arbors (Z and e of the two winding barrels as well as the two staii's f, g, each of which is provided with a crown f or g are shown. By operation of these crowns the staffs f and 9 may be turned and the hour and minute and alarm hands thus set. The barrel arbors d, 6, each are fitted with a winder h, 71. The alarm movement is inclosed in a casing is the base of which is formed by a bell m which is fixed to the plate 6 and spaced therefrom by three nuts 71. The central part of this bell is formed 1' v r IOllDHlg a neutral A0116 and preventing the central part 727. from participating in the sound vibrations of the rim. The nuts 71. which secure the bell may thus be placed in any position on the central part m even quite near the edge, as shown in the drawing, without the sound and tone of the bell being affected.
i l hat I claim is: 1. An alarm clock comprising a casing and a. bell mounted at the base or back of and within said casing, said bell being recessed centrally so as to afford a housing or recepe, within the rear edge of said casin for the winders and other parts.
in alarm clock comprising a casing and. a bell, mounted at the base or back of and within said casing, said bell being recessed centrally so as to afford a housing or receptacle, within the rear edge of said casing, for bell comprising, outside of its central recess, a flange and an exterior or peripheral sounding run.
in testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 85 two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN ALBERT GHAPPUIS. Witnesses M. MULLER, A. J. ELLIS.
