ARTHUR CLEVELAND, 0F AUGUSTA, ARKANSAS.
COMBINATION UMBRELLA AND CANE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented IIay 18, 1920 Application filed February 17, 1920. Serial No. 359,434.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR CLEVELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of \Voodrufi", State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Combination Umbrella and Cane; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to combined umbrella and walking canes and has for its object to provide a walking cane having telescopically disposed therein an umbrella, which umbrella, if desired to use the same may be easily and quickly removed from the cane, the cane inverted so as to form the handle member for the umbrella and the umbrella stick inserted in the inverted upper end of the cane and held therein, so that the umbrella may be opened and used.
A further object is to provide a combined umbrella and cane comprising a tubular member, one end of said tubular member being split and receiving an enlarged end of a second tubular member, said second tubular member being provided with means for holding an umbrella stick which carries an umbrella when in folded position which is disposed within the tubular member of the cane. Also to provide means whereby the tubular member which carries the umbrella may be detached, the umbrella removed from the tubular body member, the tubular body member which carries the umbrella inverted and its tapered end held in the end of tubular body member from which its has been removed so that the umbrella may be opened and used.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the same in the form of a cane.
Fig. 2' is a side elevation of the device showing the same after it has been formed into an umbrella.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device showing the umbrella carrying tubular member after the same has been removed from the body of the cane, the umbrella open and the tubular member slid upwardly to its second notch, so that it can be received by the body tubular member when the same is inverted.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the tubular body member.
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of one of the retaining sleeve.
b Fig. 8 is a detail view of the handle-mem- Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a tubular body member which when the device is in the form of a cane as shown in Fig. 1, or when it is in the form of an umbrella as shown in Fig.2, forms a body member for the cane, or a staff for the umbrella, to which a handle may be attached. By referring to Figs. 1 and 3 which show the device in the form of a cane, it will be seen that a tapered tubular section 2 provided with a large cylindrical head 3 is provided. The head 3 is disposed in the split end 4 of the member 1 in the lower end of the chamber 5 of said tubular member 1, said enlarged portion 3 being held in the split end 4 by means of a tapered threaded sleeve 6, which threads on the lower end of the tubular member 1 and forces the segments formed by the splits into engagement with the enlargement 3. Tubular member 2 at its enlarged end receives and frictionally holds a slidable sleeve 8, which sleeve is held in its down position by a spring detent 9 of the umbrella stick 10, which cooperates with an aperture 11 in the sleeve 8. The umbrella stick 10 being provided with a conventional form of umbrella 12 which is adapted to be raised, the stays 12 being pivotally connected to the sleeve 8. The upper end of the umbrella stick 11 and the umbrella 12 is disposed in the chamber 5 of the tubular member 1 when the device is in the form of a walking cane. The upper end of the tubular member 1, when the device is in the form of a walking cane, is provided with a handle member 13, there being a tapered threaded sleeve 15 similar to sleeve 6 threaded on'the upper split end of the tubular member 1 as shown in Fig. 6. -The umbrella stick is also provided with a detent 16 which engages the aperture 11 in the sleeve 8 when the device is used as a umbrella. When it is desired to convert the cane into anumbrella, the sleeve 6 is unscrewed, then the operator grasps the tubular sectionQ and removes the umbrella and its stick from the end of the tubular body member 1. The operator then places the member 2 in body member 1 in the position as shown in Fig. 6, after which as he forces the umbrella stick downwardly the umbrella will be raised. This downward movement of the stick be ing continued until the detent 16 engages the aperture 11 inthe sleeve 8. Then the sleeve 15 and the sleeve 6 are screwed onto When it is desired to convert the um brella back into a cane, the operation is the reverse to the one set forth above.
From the above it will be seen that a combination umbrella and cane is provided wherein the converting of a cane into an umto-devices of this character now 011 the market.
The invention having been set forthwhat is claimed as new and useful is A combined umbrella and walking cane comprising a tubular member, said tubular 'member having its ends vertically splitand threaded, tapered sleeves threaded "on said split and threaded ends of the tubular memher, a tapered tubular member disposed in said first mentioned tubular member, an umbrella carrying stick slidably mounted in the tapered tubular member, said threaded sleeves on the ends of the first mentioned tubular member forming means whereby the enlarged end of the tapered tubular member may be frictionally held in the upperend of the first mentioned tubular member or in the lower end thereof.
