Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application 11nd october 30, 1916. .Serial No. 128,365.
To all whom, it may concern.'
Be it known that I GEORGE A. Banaan2 a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at Detroit, 1n the county of Wayne and State of Michi n, have invented a new and useful Shim-l` older for Valve-Tappets, of which the following is a ecifcatlon.
This invention relates to shim holders for valve tappets, and it consists in the novel features of construction and association of parts as hereinafter sst forth and claimed.
The invention has for its object the provision of simple and elcient means for use in connection with the valve tappets of intei-nal explosive engines and the like, where by adjustments may be readily made between the engaging ends of the valve stem and its actuating tappet to com ensate for wear and maintain a proper earance or working relation between the operating parte.
In attaining the object the invention contemplates, briefly stated, the employment of an attachable head or holder having an opening for the reception of the end of the tappet for actuating the valve stem and valve of an internal combustion engine, which is provided upon diametrically opposits edges with pairs of laterally pro- )eating stops and inwardl adapted to receive an retain thereon against displacement one or more sheet metal shims by engagement with the edges thereof, and which, when inserted in position inter osed between the adjacent ends of the va ve stein and tap et, serve to retain said head against axial is lacenlent therewith and to provide for regu atin the space or clearance between the ends o said valve stem and teppet, in a manner to enable adjustments to be made from time to time to overcome undue lost motion resulting from wear upon the operating parts.
'In the accompanying drawings a preferred structure formation of tie invention is illustrated, and in which',
Figure l is a perspective View of the head or shim holder detached.
Fig.`2 is a sectional elevation of a common form of cam actuated valve, showing the holder mounted unlon the valve tappet and carrying a plur ity of shims interposed between the adjacent ends ofthe ta pet and valve stem in positlon as when m operation.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional elevation of the hooked tongues tappet with the holder thereon, and showing one of the shims in position as when inserting or withdrawing it fromfthe holder.
eferring to the arts of the device by the characters of re erence marked on the drawing? the holder which is preferably formed y stamping irom sheet metal, conslsts of a rectan latel havi struck centrally from t e y to proj ectnnterall from one face thereof a tubular bose or hul; 2, the bore 8 of which extends axiall through and thro h the body o-f t e plate and is .of suitable 1an-meter to freely receive the worli end of a valve tappet u on which it is adapted to be mounted. he tappet 4 and its actuating cem 5, to ether with a valve 6 having a s rin `presse stem engageable with the en of t e tap et and by which the valve is reciprocate as is commons for controlling the port of an engine cylinder, is shown 1n Fi 2.
Formed centrally upon am? integral with opposite edges of the plate 1 of the holder, are "diametrically opposed pairs of laterally extending lugs or stops 8 and laterall and inwardly extending right-angled hoo or flanged tongues 9. The under faces of the flanges 10 of said tongues are spaced from and extend over the upper face of the plate lar bo 1 1n a plane parallel therewith below the upper or free ends of the stops 8', and said flanged tongues and stops are adapted to receive andengage respectively correspondin of thin rectangular sheet metal shims 1 which are preferably of varying thicknesses, and of such size as to occupy the area between the stops end tongues by which they will. be retained against displacement when Superim osed upon the face of the plate of the older, as shown in Fig. 2.
The shims may be inserted into position upon the holder or withdrawn therefrom individually b deecting the body of the shim suilicien y to permit it to pass over `one of the stops and enable the edges to enter or withdraw -from beneath the flanges of the tongues with a bodily movement of the shim transversely of the holder, as shown in 2.
When the older 1s placed upon the tappet with the-shims in osition thereon, as shown in Fig. 2, the ho der will be retained a ainst axial movement in one direction h tle engagement of the shims with the en of the tappet and in the opposite direction hy the engagement o'll the Hlxiins with the end of the vulve stem, while the shims will he retained against hilfeml movement, with the holller hy contact; with the stops unil tongues, .inll against horlily displacement hy the engagyfvioent of t-he {lnnges ol' the tongues with the 1 orginal edges ol the nppernioat lhim of the holden Thus the holder :unl shines are rendered self-fittiwliing uml inter locking, enabling the Shinn: lo he readily in,w terposed or withdrawn from between the working enfls of the tappet und vulve stem to provide means for adjustment to overcome Wear and maintain the parts in nornml workin g rela bien.
