To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBnnTUs TRAvIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Clutch, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clutches particularly designed for use in connection with fleshing machines, one of the objects being to provide a clutch of novel form for automatically uncoupling the driven mechanism from the drive mechanism after a predetermined movement of the driven mechanism.
A further object is to provide a clutch which is simple and compact in construction and will not get out of order readily.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a supporting frame with upwardly extending side portions 2 in which are journaled trunnions 3 extending from the ends of a flesher r in the form of a cylinder provided, on its periphery, with spiral blades 4 diverging from the center of the cylinder. In other words, the blades upon one half of the cylinder are pitched oppositely to the blades upon the other half, certain of the blades coming together at the center of the cylinder to form V-shaped knives or scrapers. This has been clearly shown in Fig. A pulley 5 is secured to one of the trunnions 3 and secured to the other trunnion are fixed and loose pulleys 6 and '2' respectively.
Pulley 5 is adapted to transmit motion through a crossed belt 8 to a pulley 9 mounted for rotation on a fixed shaft 10, this pulley 9 being secured to a sleeve 11 revoluble on shaft 10 and to which sleeve is secured a small pulley 12. Motion is transmitted from pulley 12 through a belt 13 to a large pulley 14 supported by a shaft 15 extending transversely of and supported by the rear portion of the frame and which shaft is coupled to the shaft 10 by a link 16. Pulley lt has a hub 17 constituting an extension and formed with or secured to this hub is a pulley 18 the inner side of which is recessed as at 19, the wall of the recess being toothed as at 20. Secured to the shaft 15 so as to work within the recess 19 is an arm 21 to which a pawl 22 is pivotally r-onnected, there being a spring 23 interposed between this pawl and a lug 24: on shaft 15, this spring serving to hold the pawl normally pressed outwardly against the toothed wall of recess 19. Extending from the frame 1 is an arm 25 having a laterally extending finger 26 constituting a guide for a clutch member 27 which is slidably mounted on but does not rotate with the shaft 15. This clutch member includes oppositely extending arms 28 one of which has a forked terminal 29 which slidablyengages the finger 26. Parallel stripping pins 30 project from. the respective arms 28 of the clutch member and extend into the recess 19 where they will be successively engaged by the pawl '22 during the rotation of shaft 15. Clutch member 27 is engaged by a yoke 31 at the upper end of an arm 32 which is secured to a rock shaft 83 on one side of the frame 1. This rock shaft has a foot lever 3d attached to the front end thereof and which is normally yieldingly supported by a spring The hub 17 has a sprocket 36 designed to transmit motion through a chain 37 to a sprocket 38 secured to one end of a shaft 39 which is journaled in spring pressed bearings located in the upper portions of the sides of frame 1. cured a corrugated roller 4.0 which cooperates with another roller -11 preferably of rubber. 42 journaled in bearings 43 carried by the upper ends of arms 44. These arms are fulcrumed upon studs 45 extending inwardly from the sides of the frame 1. The arms are extended downwardly and rearwardly from their fulcrums and are provided at their lower ends with anti-friction rollers 46 constantly engaging cams 47 secured to and revoluble with the shaft 15. A gear 48 is secured to shaft 37 close to one end of roller 40 and another gear 49 is secured to shaft 42 adjacent one end of roller 41. These gears 48 and 49 have long teeth so that the two gears will constantly mesh irrespective of any shifting of the roller 41 relative to the roller 40. The parts are so proportioned that when the cams 47 have thrust the rollers 46 downwardly as far as possible, the roll 41 will be pressed against the roll 40 or will be binding tightly upon a hide inserted between the two rolls. Furthermore when the parts are thus located, the roll 41 will be pressedinwardly toward the flesher 4.
A chute 50 may be mounted below' the fiesher and the roll 41 and a hood 51 may be located above the flesher, the same being spacedsui'liciently from the roll 40 to permit the insertion of a hide downwardly between the hood and the roll.
For the purpose of keeping the blades of the fiesher sharp, two oppositely rotating screws 52 and 53 are arranged across the rear portion of the machine and are journaled in the sides of the frame 1. These screws areprovided with meshing gears 54 at one end anda pulley 55 is connected to one of the screws and receives motion through a belt 56 from the pulley 18 A guide rail 57 connects the, sides of the frame and is parallel with and in front of the screws 52 and 53. This rail is slidablyengaged by a carriage 5S having an arm 59 which is designed to travel along the back or outer face of the rail 57 and has a stem 60 slidably mounted therein. .A foot 61 is provided at the inner end of this stemand a head 62 is provided at the outer end. A spring 63 is mounted in the armand bears against the foot 61 and serves to hold said foot normally pressed into engagement with a finger 64 extending from the center of a feed nut 65. This feed nut is pi-votally mounted within the carriage upon a pin v 66' provided therefor and includes oppositely extending threaded yokes 67 and 68. The yoke 67 is designed to engage the upper feed screw 52, while the lower yoke68 is designed to engage the feed screw Finger 64 has faces 69 which converge to a point and when one of these faces is engaged by the foot 61, yoke 67 will be pressed against the feedscrew 52. Then the other face 69 is engaged by the foot 61, yoke 68 will be pressed into engagement with the feed screw lVhen'the point o'f'the finger is engaged by the foot 61, both yokes 67 and 68 will be held out of engagement with their feed screws. l/Vhen the nut is in this position the carriage can be shifted freely along the guide rail.
Slidably mounted on the carriage is a holder 70,.to which is secured a block 71 of sharpening material such as emery. In usingtheapparatus the flesher is'rotated by a belt, not shown, engaging the fixed pulley 6 and the blades of the fiesher will thus rotate in the. direction indicated by the arrow in Fig.8. At the same time motion will beitransmitted through the belt 8 to pulleys 4) and 11, thence through belt the feed screws 52 and 53 and motion will also be transmitted throughthe chain 37' to t uppe e r0 4 whic y m an 0 gears 48 and 49, transmits motiontothe lower ,feedroll .41, the two feed rollsrotating in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3. If the yokes 6 7 and 68 of the nut 65 areout. of engagement with the screws-52 and 53, the transmission of motion through the said screws will have no effect.

Thus the stems 30 will be pressed into the recess 19 and one of them willbe-engage dby the pa-wl 22, thus holdingsaidpawl disengaged from the teeth 20[and ..allowing pulley 18 to rotate freely on the shaft 15. Assuming that the cams 47 areextended upwardly at thistirne, they will move the arms .44 with their upper ends lowered .so thatthelower feed roll 41 willbem-oved downwardly and outwardly away from the ,flesher. By in sorting a hide between the rolls 4.0 and .41 so that the flesh side of the hide will be toward the fiesher 4, and by then n10- mentarily depressingthelever 34,3the pins 30 will be withdrawn :from the recess 19,
thus allowing pawl 22 to spring outwardly into engagement with one of the teeth 20. Consequently the rotating pulley 18 will also transmit motion through the pawl 22 and arm 21 to the shaft 15 and cause the cams 49 to rotate. Upon the completion of a onehalf revolution, the pawl 22 will come into contact with the other pin 80 which has moved back into the recess 19 as soon as the foot lever has been released and, consequently, the pawl will be disengaged from the tooth 20 so that the rotation of the cam 47 will cease while the pulley 18 will continue to rotate. This one half rotation of the cam will be enough to swing the roll 41 backwardly and upwardly toward the flesher so that as the rapidly rotating flesher operates to remove the membrane, etc., from the hide, the edge of the hide will be gripped between the feed rolls 40 and 41 and will be withdrawn from the machine slowly. The substances removed from the hide will be thrown downwardly onto the chute 50. As soon as the hide has passed through the machine the foot lever can be momentarily depressed to release the pawl 22, thus allowing shaft 15 to make another one half revolution whereupon the pawl will come against the other pin 30 which has moved back into the recess 19 with the result that the pulley 18 will be automatically uncoupled from the shaft and the cams will remain station ary after permitting the arms 44 to shift so as to swing the roll 41 away from the fiesher.
Should it be desired to sharpen the blades of the fiesher while the machine is in operation, it would merely be necessary to tilt the nut 65 out of the position shown in Fig. 5 so that, for example, yoke 67 will engage the screw 52. This screw, which is constantly rotating, will carry the nut and the carriage longitudinally along the rail 57 and by adjusting the sharpening material 71 toward.
the flesher, the edges of the blades will be brought successively into engagement therewith as said block is fed transversely of the machine. By shifting the nut in the opposite direction, the block can be returned to its initial position or, if desired, this shifting can be effected automatically by the fingers 73. In other words, when the nut 65 reaches one limit of its movement, the finger 64 will engage finger 7 3 and be thrown downwardly to bring yoke 68 into engagement with screw 53 whereupon the carriage will be moved back toward its initial position until the finger 64 engages finger 74 which will throw the nut upwardly and bring the yoke 67 again in engagement with screw 52. Thus the sharpening means will move back and forth slowly and throughout the length of the fiesher. The sharpening operation can take place either during the fleshing operati-on or after such operation.
As shown in Fig. 6 a cam 7 5 may be used in lieu of the cam 47. This cam 75 has its periphery so shaped at 76 that a partial rotation of the cam can be effected without moving the arm 44 and the parts connected thereto.
What is claimed is In combination, a normally stationary clutch member including a spring pressed pawl, a normally revoluble clutch member having teeth for engagement by the pawl, means normally in the path of the pawl for holding the clutch members disengaged, means for momentarily releasing the pawl to couple the clutch members and cause the same to rotate in unison, said pawl engaging means operating to automatically disengage the clutch members upon the completion of a one-half revolution of the members.
