To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT W. GRAvEs, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco-Pipe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved tobacco pipe arranged to permit the user to readily keep the stem clean and sweet bythe use of an absorbent material contained in the pipe stem, and to permit of conveniently removing the saturated absorbent material from the pipe stem without danger of the smoker soiling the fingers. Another object is to prevent any nicotin from passing to the mouth of the smoker.

In order to accomplish the desired result,

use is made of an absorbent material adapted to be passed into the stem of the pipe, a mouthpiece removably held on the said stem, and a hook having a shank attached to the mouthpiece and projecting from the inner end thereof, the point of the hook being adapted to engage the said absorbent material to permit of withdrawing the same from the stem and to allow of dlsengaging it from the point of the hook without the user soiling the fingers.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of the tobacco pipe;

Fig. 3 is a cross section of the tobacco pipe on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

.The bowl 10 of the tobacco pipe is set in a cup-shaped base 11 provided with an apertured boss 12 into which fits the pipe stem 13 provided at its outer end with a mouthpiece 14. A short tube 15 extends centrally in the boss 12 and. is attached to the side wall of the base 11, and the said tube is in register with the bore '16 leading to the interior of the bowl 10 at the bottom thereof. The tube 15 extends through a plug 17 held on the inner end of the stem ,together and fastened in place near the ends by wrapping threads 21. The forward end of the absorbent material 20 extends alongside the projecting end of the tube 18, and the said absorbent material is engaged at or near its middle by the point 22 of a hook 23 having a shank 24 terminating in a loop 25 engaging the inner end of the mouthpiece 141 so as to move with the same when the latter is removed from the stem 13. It will be noticed that the absorbent material 20 readily absorbs any nicotin, saliva and like matter passing into the stem 13 when using the pipe for smoking purposes. Whenever the absorbent material 20 becomes saturated with such matter it can be readily withdrawn from the stem 13 on the operator removing the mouthpiece 14 from the stem. After the absorbent material has been removed it can be readily shaken 0E the angular point 22 of the hook 23 without the user touching the absorbent material, thereby preventing the soiling of the fingers. The wick can be cheaply manufactured. and a saturated one can be readily removed and replaced by a new one by simply hooking the wick onto the point 22 and then pushing the wick into the stem until the mouthpiece 14 is seated on the other end of the stem 13.

It will be noticed'that the tubes 15 and 18 project centrally into the stem 13 and consequently the saliva, nicotin and the like passing into the stem 13 by way of the tube 15 are not liable to be drawn into the tube 18.

It will also be noticed that by the arrangement described, the stem can be readily kept clean and sweet by the absorbent material and the nicotin prevented from passing to the mouth of the smoker.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: I

-A pipe having a stem, a mouthpiece held 5 removably on the outer end of the stem, a

tube of absorbent material removably inserted in the said mouthpiece and projecting beyond the inner end thereof a short distance into the stem, a wick within the stem and extending at one end alongside the projecting portion of the said tube, and a hook held on the said mouthpiece and detachably engaging the said wlck at a point in front of the said tube.
