Application filed October 26, 191e. Serial No. 127,760.
To all whom t may concern:
' Be it known'thatI, HENRY R. W'YKERT, a. citizen of theUnited States, residii'igat Council Bluffs, in the countyofPottawattaL mie and State of Iowa, haveinventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Tents,
and have described the same inthe follow#y ing specification, illustrated by the accom- My invention relates to that rclass of shelter tents, or dog tentslso called, which indi-I vidually comprise a collapsible frame having a flexible *covering and'a floor which are permanently attached to the frame. It is the'inain object"ofthe` inventio'nt combine" in a tent of this class the advantages of a sleeping-bag with those of a tent having unyielding supports; to simplify the frame of the tent and reduce to a minimum the number of tent poles therein; to utilize the tent poles as ribs stiiening and reinforcing the tent cover, and thereby prevent the cover from blowing in or out, from sagging and bellying, while the tent is standing; to avoid the use of a center pole, and of all other inside poles, as structural parts of the tent; to obviate all need of lacing in setting up the tent; to dispense with the use of a ridgepole; to facilitate the operations of setting up and taking down the tent, and reduce to a minimum the time necessary to be expended in these operations; to preserve continually without variation the predetermined ground plan of the individual tent, as set up from time to time; in this way to prevent distortion of the tent; to stabilize the tent by inclining each of its several sides obliquely to the wind blowing horizontally; to provide a cheap and superior substitute for the com mon A tent; at the same time to render the tent, when taken down, easy to be compactly rolled up for storage or transportation; and in general to produce a superior tent of the specified class. To accomplish these results, I make the tent pyramidal in form, and preferably diamond-shaped in horizontal section and ground plan, and incorporate therein for the support of the covering a collapsible frame consisting of two duplicate poles reinforcing opposite corners of the tent respectively and hinged together terminally at the apex of the pyramid.
In said drawings, illustrating the best manner in which I have contemplated applying the principles of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a tent which is constructed in accordance with these principles, and set up ready for occl'ipancy. Fig. 2 is a corner elevation of the same, with the door and windowlopen. Figs. '3 and l are vertical sections on the section lines BMS and 4 4; of Fig. 2 respectively.
The two poles forming the frame of the tent, 'are denotedr inthe drawings by the numerals l', and are'joined" together at the top `by'the hinge 2. The foursloping sides of the tent cot/"er, being of canvas or other flexible material, and 'denoted "respectively bythe numerals 3, 4, 5 and '6, are offuniforin size and have the uniform geometrical outline and the 'position of a 'scalen'e' triangle whose Ibase is at the bottom of the tent. Along their shortest edges, corresponding to the shorter leg of the triangle, the sides 3 and 6, and likewise the sides 4 and 5, are joined together, either integrally or by sewing, in abutting or mutually registering positions, asshcwn; while along their remaining edges, corresponding to the longer leg of the triangle, the sides 3 and 1I, and likewise the sides 5 and 6, are united by a rope seam, terminating at the ground in the loop 7 for the peg 8.
The poles l, which straddle the width of the tent where it is widest, are permanently secured to opposite corners of the tent cover, from top to bottom of the tent, by the welts 9, sewed to the sides l and 5 and to the sides 3 and 6 respectively, and forming therewith the sleeves or pockets denoted by the same numeral 9, in which the poles are permanently fastened by the tacks l0. The Hoor of the tent, having preferably the shape of a diamond, or, gecmetrically speaking, the shape of a rhomb, and being denoted by the numeral 19, is peripherally united, either integrally or by sewing, with the several sides of the tent throughout their entire length at the bottom. Then in use it lies flat on the ground 1l, and, together with the covering, is distended by the poles l as shown, and stretched lengthwise between the pegs 8. Whenever needed to hold down the tent, additional pegs, resembling the pegs 7, but not shown in the drawings, may be driven into the ground through the addi-' 15. In like manner the hole 16 is out through the side 6 for a Window, and provided with the external flap 17 for a shutter, Which is similarly operable by the rope 18.
Operatively the tent is very easily and speedily set up for use by merely laying it out flat on the ground, right side up and with the poles distended as Wide as the floor, pegging down one of the loops 7, and placing the entire structure in longitudinal tension by pulling and pegging down the other of these loops. By this operation the distended frame is tilted from a horizontal position to the vertical and raised position shown.
.I claim as my invention- 1. A Collapsible four-sided tent, Comprising a normally flat diamond-shaped floor of flexible material, a normally pyramidal tent cover having its bottom edge Continuously united With the periphery of the floor, a pair of mutually hinged tent poles permanently attached tothe cover and normally distending the same With the floor diagonally from corner to corner transversely, and means for pulling taut the united floor and @over diaggether at the apeXo the tent and permanently attached to the cover from the apeX to the base along diagonally opposite oorners of the cover for the purpose of tensioning the same transversely, and "means for tensioning the cover longitudinally when so tensioned transversely.
