CHECK-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 191%..
Application led March 3, 1916. Serial No. 81,991.
Vand useful Improvements in Check-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rEhe invention relates to improvements 4in check protectors.
rlhe object of the'present invention is to improve the construction of check protectors and to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive construction 'adapted for use in connection with a fountain pen and capable of being readily applied to the cap thereof and of also forming a clip for securing the fountain pen in the pocket as well as partially perforating and weakening the portion of the check on which the amount is written thereby effectually preventing a check from being raised.
A further object of the invention is to provide a check protector of this characten which will be sufficientlyv small to be easily carriedin the outer portion of the cap of a fountain pen wherebythe device will not interfere with the arrangement of the cap on a fountain pen and will enable a Vcap equipped with the check protector to be readily substituted for an ordinary cap where it is designed to equip a fountain pen with the improved device for protecting checks.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details`- of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any ofthe ad Y vantages of the invention. 4
In the drawing- Figure l is a side elevation of a fountain pen provided with a check protector constructed in accordance with this inventiom.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the outer portion of the fountain pen, the latter being in a different position to show the lever in front elevation,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of a fountain pen cap equipped with a check protector, the body portion of the fountain pen being illustrated in dotted in lines and broken away,
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the fountain Pen,
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several gures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated-the preferred embodiment of the invention, l designates a fountain pen provided with a removable cap 2 having a central slot or bifurcation 3 in its outer end and provided also with a transverse partition 4; dividing the cap into inner and outer spaces' or compartments 5 and 6, the
having a toothed peripheral outer face forming projecting spurs or partially perforating the check and weakening the same and also roughening the protected portions to render it impossible to raise a check.
rIhe cylinder or roller 8 is mounted on a shaft 0r spindle l0 which is journaled in suitable bearings of ears or lugs 11 preferably formed integral with the cap and l0- cated at one side thereof opposite a side opening 12. TheV other cylinder or roller 9 is mounted between spaced bearing lugs or ears 13 which are, carried by the outer arm 14 of a longitudinally disposed lever 15 located exteriorly of the cap and fulcrumed .thereon at a point intermediate of its ends.
The longitudinally disposed lever is designed to be constructed of suitable spring metal or other resilient material and it is provided at or near its center with a curved inwardly extending bend 16 presenting a 'rounded convex face to the side of the cap and secured to the same by a rivet 17 which pierces the cap and the lever. 'Ihe bend spaces the inner and outer arms of the lever or member from the sides of the cap and the bearing ears or lugs -13 which extend through the side openings 12 are provided i `inner arm 19 'of the resilient lever or member is provided with a head 20 preferably in the form of a ball and constituting means for engaging 'the ,exterior of a pocket to clamp the material between it and the fountain pen whereby the'latter is retained in the pocket and is prevented from fallingy accidentally therefrom. The resiliency of the outer arm 14' of the lever ormember 15 normally maintains the roller or cylinder 9 in spaced relation with the rolleror cylinder 8 and when it is desired to protect a check, the latter is folded so that the space bearing the amount ofthe check will occupy a position adjacent to the line of the fold. rlfhe folded portion of the check is then placed between the rollers by introducing it into the slot or bifurcation 3 and the check is then drawn through the rollers while compressing the folded portion of the check by pressing against the arm 14 and the cap. The check will readily roll through the toothed rollers' or cylinders without tearing said lever, the latter being arranged to hold the paper. What is claimed is 1. A check protector including a 4supporting member provided at its outer end with a slot or bifurcation and -having spaced bearings at one side of the slot or bifurcation and provided at the opposite side thereof with an opening, a pair of check protecting rollers or cylinders arranged within the said supporting member, one of the rollers or cylinders being mounted between the said bearings, a resilient lever extending longitudinally of the supporting member and arranged exteriorly thereof and secured intermediate ofpits ends to the same, said lever having an inner pocket clamping portion or arm coacting with the inner portion of said supporting member to engage a pocket to retain the check protector therein, the outer portion of the lever having spaced bearings extending through the said opening and carrying the other roller or cylinder, said tain the check protector therein, and a roller or cylinder carried by the outer arm ofthe clamping lever and coacting with the first mentioned roller or cylinderA to 'engage a check and adapted to be operated by the the rollers or cylinders normally separated.
l In testimony whereof I alix my signa ture in presence of two witnesses. p
