Specification of Letters Patent.

a State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Yokes for Railway-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as to will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in draft yokes for railway couplings.
Heretofore it has been the practice to secure the coupling to the yoke of a draft gear by a key passing horizontally through the front end of the yoke and through a slot in the rear end of the shank of a coupling. As the yoke rests between the center or draft sills of a car underframe it is necessary with such construction to slot oneor both of said sills in order to insert or remove the key.
My invention consists in a vertical key and means supported by the yoke for holding and locking it against displacement.

1 represents a yoke U-shape in side elevation, the top and bottom members thereof being connected near their front ends by the side bars 2, which are integral with said members and operate to prevent them from spreading. This yoke 1 rests as shown in Figs. 6 and 7,.between the two members 3 constituting the center sill of the car, and the followers 4 and 5 which pass'through the yoke, en age stops 6 on the stop plates 7 secured to the adjacent faces of the members of the center sill 3. The springs or other yielding draft gear is located within the yoke between the followers, and the draft gear as a whole, is supported by the plate 8' secured to the lower edges of the center sill members, as shown in Figs. 6
and 7.
The upper and lower members of the yoke the key 10 which latter is oblong in cross section as shown in Fig. 2. This key passes through the slots in the yoke members and also through an elongated slot in the shank of the coupling, and operates to detachably secure the coupling to the yoke. This key is without a head so that it may be introduced from below, and is of a length suflicient to pro ect through both members of the yoke and depend below the lower member, the
lower end of the key being provided with a transverse hole for the passage of a pin 11.
The lower member of the yoke is provided at opposite sides of the key opening .therein with parallel lugs 12, each having an opening for the passage of the pin 11, so that when the key 10 is properly placed and supported by'both members of the yoke 1, the pin hole therein will aline with the pin holes in lugs 12, and when the pin is applied, the key will be locked and supported in such position by the pin 11. This pin as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is provided with a head at one end, and is threaded at the other end for the attachment of a lock nut 13.
In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, onelug 10 is provided with an offset finger 14 located in a plane below the pin hole to form a stop for the bent end 11 of the pin. The bent end depends by gravity and 1s prevented from working out by the finger 14. To insert this pin, it is turned so as to carry the bent end above the finger and after it has been fully inserted the bent end is released and turns by gravity into vertical position.
In the construction shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 the lugs 10 of the construction previously described are dispensed with, and the pin 11 is passed through holes in the side bars 2 of the yoke, through an elongated slot in the shank of the'coupling 9 and through a hole in the key 10, the elongated slot in the coupling shank permitting the coupling to have a limited sliding move- 100 yoke is provided with the ln s 15 located 0 to receive the bent end 11 of t e pin'll between them', and thus prevent the pin from swinging, and if necessary, the pin may be locked in place against endwise displacement by the lock nut as shown in Fig. 7, or 110 it may be locked against endwise displacement by a finger such as is shown in Figs. 4

When the pin is used as in Figs. 6 and 8, it is necessary to slot one of the sill members as at 16, (Fig. 7), to permit the pin to be inserted at the side.

5. In draft gear for cars, the combination of a yoke, a key passing vertically through the yoke for locking the coupling to the same, a pin passing through a part of the yoke and through the key and having a bent end, and means engaging said bent end for limiting the turning movement of the pin.
