ADJUSTING MECHANISM FOR WRAPPING-MACHIN ES.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, llgft.
Original application filed November 26, 1915, Serial No. 63,502. Divided and this application filed February 21, 1916. Serial No. 79,621.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Adjusting Mechanism for Wrapping- Machines and T do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This application constitutes a division'of my co-pending application for double wrapper wrapping machines, filed November 26th, 1915, Serial No. 63,502.
This invention relates to an adjusting means for the carriage on which the driving and supporting rolls of the wrapping machine are mounted by which an article is supported in proper position for wrapping .and revolved at the required rate of speed to receive the wrapping applied thereon.
It is an object therefore of this invention to construct a means for adjusting the supporting carriage provided for an article in a wrapping machine whereby the article may be positioned according to its size to re ceive a wrapper applied thereon.
It is also an object of this invention to provide an adjusting means forming a part of a wrapping machine adapted to wrap annular ob ects of different size, such as tires, coils of wire and the like, whereby the article may be supported at a position proper to receive a wrapper applied thereon regardless of the size of the article.
It is furthermore an important object of this invention to construct an adjusting means for the supporting carriage for articles in a wrapping machine to position different articles of different size properly to receive a wrapper applied thereon.
It is finally an object of this invention to construct a simple and effective means for transferring an adjusting movement to the supporting carriage and rollers for an artijustable carriage and means for adjusting the same at the lower end of the machine.
Fig. & is a detail section on line 4- of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a detail section taken on line 66 of Fig. 3. n
Fig. 7 is a detail View with parts omitted, taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 3.
As shown in the drawings:
The frame of the wrapping machine is denoted as a whole by the reference numeral 1, and is provided with an arched cross.
frame member 2, from which an open gap or crescent shaped shuttle frame 3, depends, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. A shuttle 4,
having an open gap therein, is rotatable around on said crescent shaped frame and is adapted to carry wrapping material to apply the same on an article which is mounted in upright position in the machine projecting through the open gap of said crescent shaped frame to permit the shuttle to rotate through the eye of the article. The article mounted in the machine for wrapping is supported upon and driven by a pair of power driven rollers 5. These rollers 5, are secured in parallel relation upon shafts 6, which are journaled in a carriage or frame 7, which is adjustable in the machine. Said carriage or frame 7, is provided centrally at each end thereof with an upper outwardly curved arm 8, and a lower arm 9, said arms 8 and 9, at each end of the carriage in alinement with one another and apertured to en- Nil wheel 13. Journaled on small stud shafts 14 and 15, secured in the frame 1, are sheaves 16 and 17 respectively, and connected to each of said shafts and to its respective sheave journaled thereon in each instance is a coiled initially stressed spiral spring 18, which is so connected that said sheaves tend to rotate in opposite directions.
A sprocket chain 19, is trained around thesprocket wheel 13, of the shaft 11, and also around a sprocket wheel 20, secured on a shaft 21, which is journaled 1n the frame 1, of the machine on a line between and above the stud shafts 14 and '15. The ends of said sprocket chain 19, are secured to the respective sheaves 14 and 15,the spiral springs of each of said sheaves acting normally to tend towind the ends of the sprocket chain thereon, by rotation, as pointed out, in opposite directions. The shaft 21, has a small worm pinion 22, secured thereon, which meshes with a worm 23, secured upon a long adjusting rod or shaft 24, journaled at an angle in the frame 1, of the wrapping machine, and having an actuating crank 25, on its upper end to rotate the same.
The operation is as follows:
- When it is desired to adjust the supporting driving rollers 5, on which the article to be wrapped rests to move the article into proper relation with the rotatable shuttle 4, the crank 25, is actuated either in one direction or the other, dependent upon the direction of adjustment desired. This serves to rotate the shaft or rod 24, which in turn, through the worm and worm wheel 23 and 22, rotates the shaft 21, whereupon the sprocket 20, thereon, moves the sprocket chain 19, thus rotating the shaft 11, by the sprocket wheel 13. Rotation of the shaft 11, causes the small pinion 12, thereon, meshing with the teeth formed on the upright 10, to raise or lower the carriage 7 in the frame of the wrapping machine. Due to the tension take-up mechanism consisting of the spring impelled sheaves 16 and 17, the one end of the chain 19, is wound on one thereof when the carriage 7, is elevated, and wound on the other thereof when the carriage 7, is
lowered.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. An adjusting means for the drivingand supporting rollers of a wrapping machine comprising a carriage on which said rollers are journaled, upright guide members secured in the frame of the machine, means on said carriage slidably engaging said guide members, a shaft journaled in said carriage, pinions thereon engaging said upright guides to elevate and lower the carria 0 when said shaft is rotated, a sprocket chain to rotate said shaft, and tension means adapted to take up said sprocket chain when the chain is moved to rotate said shaft.
2. An adjusting means for a carriage vertically movable in a wrapping machine comprising in combination with uprights secured in the machine, means journaled in said carriage to engage said uprights to elevate and lower the carriage thereon, a sprocket chain to rotate said means, means engaging said sprocket chain to operate the same, and spring tensioned sheaves to which the respective ends of said sprocket chain are connected to take up and feed out said sprocket chain when the carriage is raised and lowered 3. The combination with an adjustable carriage of a wrapping machine and the adjusting means for said carriage, of a sprocket chain for operating said adjusting'means, spring impelled sheaves to which the respective ends of said sprocket chain are connected, and a sprocket wheel adapted to operate said chain to drive said means and said adjustable carriage.
4. An adjusting means for a wrapping machine comprising a carriage; adjustable mechanisms thereon for driving and supporting an article to be wrapped, a sprocket chain for operating the carriage, and an automatic tension device connected to each end of said sprocket chain to take up the same as the chain is used to operate the adjustable mechanisms.
5. The combination with a wrapping machine, of adjustable means mounted thereon for supporting an article to be wrapped, flexible means connected with said means to raise or lower the same, automatic take-up means connected to each end of said flexible means, and manually operable means adapted to drive said flexible means to position said adjustable means to permit wrapping of the article.
6. In an adjusting means for a wrapping machine of the class described, a carriage, means thereon for driving and supporting an article to be wrapped, flexible means connected to operate said carriage, en eutematic take-up device connected to each end of said flexible means, and mechanisms for operating said flexible means to transmit a movement to the carriage to wise or lower the same to properly position the article to be Wrapped.
In testimony whereof have hereunto suhscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
