2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.-
` T all whomz' may cohcerit Be it known that I, Sinner U. prinsen, a citizen of the. United States, residing `at Universal, in the county of Vermilion and State `of Indiana, have invented `new and useful Improvements in Porch-Swings, of
A which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of porch swings.
In carrying out my inventionit is my purp pose to produce a porch swing of an treniely simple constructionincluding a plat form havinga seat at each of the endsthere` i of p and being i provided with A means attached to the supporting elements for the. chair whereby veither of the said seatsmay be adjusted independently of the other seat so that the seats may be retained at a different inclination if desired. Y
It is also my purpose "to-produce a porch swing so constructed and arranged as `to permit of the folding of the parts, so that the swing may be collapsed into a small nickasc for storage or trans ortation. .Y o o It is a further object of the invention to so construct and connect the parts of a porch form which is arched so as to present a natural and comfortable support for ,the seat either when the swing is or is not in motion. With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction,
combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following` specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
n the drawings:
Figure 1 is aside elevation ofa swing constructedin accordance with the present invention, `the dotted lines illustrating 'the manner in which one of the seats may be adjusted without interfering with thc position of the other seat,
Fig. 2 is an end view of the same,
. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 41 is a perspective view of the device folded. i
Preferably I construct the platform of two elongated side pieces 1-1 which have their upper edges rounded from their central portions to their ends, the said sides rr ric-- sinnery U; Jornvsoiv, or UNIVERSAL, INDIANA.

which straddle the notches so as to have ltheir i arms in aline with the side walls of' the.y
notches. `Through these yokes I pass a metal rod 6 which is adapted to rest in thenotches 5 when the swing is in its set up position. l
To the projecting ends ofthe Arespective rods `3 and 6 "I pivotally. connectvthe side members or Stiles 7 of the back members 8 and 9 respectively. The spaced side mem-j; bers or stiles 7 of each of the back members 8 and9 are connected by upper `and lower transverse strips 10 andv11 respectively, and the adjacent vor confronting edges of these strips may be mortised to receive the tongues of vertically extending slats 12--12.
To the sides or stiles 7 of the back members S and 9, directlybelow the connecting strips 11 I pivotally secure the side members 14 of the seats 15 and 16. The oppositely disposed ypairs of side members for each of the seats 15 and 16 are connected by transverse slats 17 which may be secured to the said members ltin any desired or preferred manner. y
To `the side members 14; of the seats 15 and 16 adjacent the outer ends thereof I secure the flexible hanging supports 18, the said supports being preferably in the nature of chains and having their upper and free ends provided with rings 19 which are adapted to receive the supporting hooks 20 that are secured to the roof of the porch or to any other structure upon which the swing is to be arranged;
Secured to the projecting ends of the rods 8. and 6 and connected with the side members 141 of the seats 15 and 16, at the points thereon to which the hanging support is secured, are flexible stay members 21 which are adapted to limit the upward swinging of the seats 15 and 16 and these stay memthe upperedges ythereof are arranged-hooks `22-22, sind connected with the hunger members 18 21S at 23, ereedieseee elemeetsi preferably in the nature of chains, whereby certain of the links 25 of the said chf-eins i may bey arranged to engage with the hooks 22fenldse-uermit ethernet the Semesterbewhich suoli 'invention zrppertains `Without' further detiled description.
lhen the device is tojbe rfolded the flexs` fire, of course, removed from the `supporti'n, hools ysind the beek member 8 vis,fsfwiingjuIlClQr,thelower edges of the side'members' ofthe platform, and the seat 15 eeeeeejedvitih the seid beck 8 is swung ine lfiewit'h the Seid .Side members '0f the the' buck 9 brouofli't out of lthe notches into theieles 5` SQ @het ,the ,Said bfwlseiey .be
Copies 'ofthis patent rngy -be obtained `for swungunder the folded back and seat, the seat 16 of the back 9 being folded in a line with the-i said beck A:md the flexible elements may be employed for securing the pivoted sections of the chair in their collapsed condition.
Ila'vingfthus described the invention, what l chiim is;
In a porch swing, e platform, u rod pussing` through openings in o ne ofthe ends of seid platform, u second rod received in notches udjncent the other end of the suid platform, vsubstmitiully U-shu-ped bruckets secured to the plutform und surrounding the notches, buck members having sides pivotally secured to the mentioned rods, sent members having one of ,their ends pivotnlly connected'to the said buck members., u. Hexible henger support for the seats secured udjucent the ends of the seid seuts, u flexible stay menjiber secured @to the snidseuts Vut the outer ends thereof mid connected with the mentioned rods, e chain member'secured to the flexible henger supports, mid-hook members upon the beek adapted to receive one of the links of seid chains.
4In testimony whereof I alix my signature.
