APPLIANCE FOR TESTING VALVES OF INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES WATSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of the post town of Koondrook, in the county of Gunbower, State of Victoria, and whose post-oflice address is the said post town of Koondrook, and JAMEs GERRAND, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of the post town of Barham, in the county of Wakwol, in the State of New South Wales, and whose post-ofiice address is the said post town of Barham, both in the Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Appliances for Testing Valves of Internal- Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has been designed for expeditiously testing the valves of internal combustion engines with the object of'determining if any of the valves are leaking, and is particularly serviceable in connection with that class of motor vehicle engine having a removable head piece. At the present time it is the practice .to test allthe valves one after another by the tedious process of applying thin red lead or other marking to the seating and rotating the valve thereon. If the marking smudges or evenly communioates itself onto the valve side the valve is passed as effective. If however the result is unsatisfactory'the valve is submitted to grinding until an effective joint is obtained.
Where a comparatively large number of valves are used and one or more of the valves is leaking, the particular one not being known, it is a slow process to test them by means described, it being necessary to lift each valve off its seatand amarkingapplied to the seat. The valve then requires turning upon the seat and to be subsequently with drawn for inspection. This series of operations is dispensed with by the adoption of the present invention whereby a hood or cover is pressed upon the seating over the valve and air forced into it. The only escape for this air is through the valve. If the valve does not leak the next one is tried without loss of time and so on until the defective valve, if any, is located. To apply the hood over the valve and blow from the mouth or force air from a pump or compressor into a tube leading to the hood 1s merely the work of a few seconds. In combination with the foregoing is used a jointing ring 6. This may be of any material or combination of materials. Preferably it is made of rubber. It is preferably endless and is of such a shape and such a diameter that it is retained by an annular groove 8 hereinafter referred to.
Above the jointing ring 6 is a hood or cover 7. This may be made of cast metal, the nature of which will depend upon conditions. Within the hood is a domed air chamber 11 and around the bottom surface of the hood is an annular groove 8. The width of this groove and its depth will depend upon conditions and also upon the width and thickness of the jointing ring 6. In the crown of the hood is formed a nipple 10, provided with an air inlet hole 9.
To the nipple 10 is attached the lower end of a flexible air tube 12, the upper end of which has a mouth piece 13 attached there: to. Through the mouth piece is a hole l t.
The invention is used as follows :The hood is placed over the top of the valve in such a manner that the jointing ring rests upon the valve seating and encircles the valve. When the hood is pressed downwardly an air-tight joint is obtained between the bottom of the hood and the valve seating. The mouth piece 13 is then placed in the mouth and air is blown into the chamber 11. Or it may be forced into the chamber by an air pump or compressor. If a defective joint exists between the valve and the seating the compressed air confined within the chamber escapes therebetwe'en. By this means the operator is able to identify a leaking valve. If the valve makes a tight joint with the seating then the compressed air remains imprisoned within the chamber and the wind from the mouth of the operator has no outlet. The hood may then be lifted and applied to the next valve and so on.
By this means a simple and portable appliance is provided by which defective valves may be expeditiously identified and the defect remedied.
Having now described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A valve testing device for internal combustion engines, comprising a dome, hav- 10 ing a nipple formed with an air hole in the top, the lower edge of the dome being bent to form a seat, the edges of the seat having inwardly projecting tongues, and a gasket fitted in the seat and held in place by the tongues.
