GUY o. HEILMAN, 'or PHILAnELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
imitar-MLN. y
To all whom it may concern.'
`Be it known that'I, GY C. HEILMAN', a citizen of the United States, residing inthe cityv ofl Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements Brick- "Kilns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for burning bricks and vit is designed to provide an improved kiln'k having special means for combining air with fuel gas and distributing the heated products of combustion in contact with the green bricks so as to burn the same expeditiously and uniformly, without In practising my invention, in its p referred form, a brick kiln is provided with a gas conduit having discharge passages deliverin at intervals within the bottom of the brick chamber, in combination with an air conduit having discharge passages extending through sections of the kiln wall into communication with the gas passages,
whereby the air is preheated prior to combination with the gas and highly eifective combustion is obtained.
The characteristic features of my invention will be fully understood from thev following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a kiln embodying `my improvements;y Fig. 2 is a part sectional elevationk of the same at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 1; and Fi 3 is a part sectional plan view in illustration of details of the construction.
My improved kiln, asillustrated in the accompanyin drawings, comprises the walls 1 supporte by the foundations 2, the kiln walls forming a chamberk containing `the properly spaced stacked bricks 3 through` which pass the arches 4. Gas conduits 5 are provided on opposite sides of the kiln and are connected with'the interior thereof by the angular passages 6 which extend throug the bottoms of the walls 1 and discharge within the arches 4. The flow of gas from the conduits 5 through the passages 6 is regulated by valves`7 and access is provided to the passages by ydoors 8 which permit inspection and cleaning readily.
`Air conduits 10 yare disposed on opposite sides of the kiln and are connected by passages 11 with the passages` 6 within the walls Specification of Letters Patent.
- 12 therein.

. Application filed October 10, 1916. Serial No. 124,755.
l, theair passages being controlled by valves Substantial parts ofthe' passages 11 are disposed Within the Walls l and I air flowing therethrough, under control of the valves l2, is heated by the hot surrounding walls of the kiln prior to combination` with the gas in the assages 6. A blower 13 supplies the air in t e conduit 10 at lthe desired pressure. The products of combustion from the combined air and fuel gas, which burn Within the passages 6, iow through the arches 4 from which they are disseminated laterally and upwardlyy through the properly spaced bricks which are heated uniformly andfexpeditiously thereby, ywithout the smoke and Waste attending usual brick burning operations.
outer ends of the holes being coveredby transparent covers 15, such as plates of mica. Having described my invention, I claim: 1. A. brick kiln having Walls formin a heating chamber, a fuel gas conduit having i in a wall aforesaid a section discharging into said chamber, and an air conduit having in a wall aforesaid a sectionjcommunicating with said section first namedthereb producing a mixture of air kand gas within said Wall, in combination withan arch into and through which the heated products of conibustion flow.
2. A brick kiln having walls forming s,
heating chamber, a fuel conduit having passages extending through a Wall aforesaid` v at spaced intervals into the bottom of said chamber,` and an air conduit havin passages extending through said Wall into t e re ec` tive passages first named, therebyv pro ucing a mixture of air heated by said wall yandl gas in said passages yfirst named, in combination with arches into and through Whichthe heated products of combustion `flow. e
3. A brick kiln having Walls forming a heating chamber, a fuel gas conduit having angular passages lextending through a wallaforesaid yinto the bottom of said chamber,
valves vfor controlling the flow of gas ioo through said passages and doors for permitn i ting access to said passages, in combination with an air conduit-having angular passages extending through said wall into the respective passages aforesaid to effect within said wall a mixture of gas and heated air, and valves for controlling said passages second named.
4. A brick kiln having walls forming a heating chamber, a fuel gas conduit having passages extending into the bottom of said chamber, an air conduit having passages heated by a Wall aforesaid and communip eating with said passages first named thereby producing a mixture of heated air and 10 gas in said passages first named, a blower for forcing air through said air conduit, and peep holes in said wall adjacent to' the respective passages.
In testimony whereof, I havehereunto set 15 my name'this 2nd day of October, 1916.
