WILLIAM G. BROWN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
EXTENSION ATTACHMENT FOR VEHICLE-CONTROL PEDALS.
Macnee.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1a, 1917.
Application led May 20, 1916. Serial No. 98,947.
Z b all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension At- Vtaclmients for Vehicle-Control Pedals, of
which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in extension attachments for vehicle control pedals, and has for its object the production of a device of this character which Will be capable of ready and expeditious attachment or detachment, one which Will be of durable and economical construction, and one Which will be highly etlicient in use.
Other objects Will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention Will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through an extension attachment embodying the invention, the same being shovvn arranged in operative position upon a conventional ve hicle control pedal,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the eXtension attachment detached, and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line m--m of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises an elongated body or frame consisting of a substantially U-shaped member 1, reinforced by transversely extending cross bars 2 and 3. The sides ofmember 1, adjacent the ends of the latter, are formed With laterally opening slots l which are adapted for snug engagement With the head 5 of a conventional vehicle control pedal 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, the member 1 being narrower than the head 5 of the pedal engaged.
The attachment is locked to the vehicle pedal by means of tvvo spaced parallel pins 7 which are mounted for longitudinal sliding in the cross bars 2 and 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Said pins 7 are adapted for engagement With openings 8 Which are provided for the reception thereof in the head 5 of the pedal, said pins being releasably heldin engagement with such openings, by means of helical compression springs 9 which are arranged upon the upper' ends of said pms,
and interposed bet-Ween the cross bar 2 and a yoke 10 extending between and rigidly connected with said pins. Downward movement of the pins is limited by engagement of the ends of yoke l0 with the upturned ends of cross bar 3, asclearly shown in Figs. l and 2. VIt will be seen, that the yoke 10 constitutes a grip or finger piece whereby the pins 7 may be readily retracted, in order to disengage the attachment from the vehicle pedal, such retraction being effected most readily by engagement of the palm of the hand against the upper end of the frame member 1, and by engagement of the fingers With the yoke l0 by inserting the same in the space between said yoke and the cross bar 3. Vith this arrangement of the hand, the pins 7 may be retracted by simply drawing the fingers upwardly.
Cooperating with the body or frame of the attachment is a supplemental pedal 11, the stem 12 of Which is slidably mounted in alining openings 13 and 14, provided respectively in the upper end or bight of the member 1 and the cross piece 2. Said supplemental pedal, it will thus be seen, 4'is adapted for adjustment to any position to suit the convenience or desires of the oper ator or driver of the vehicle, the same being locked in positions of adjustment by means of a screw or pin 15 engaging With perforated ears 16 provided at opposite sides of opening 13, and adapted for engagement With any one of a plurality of spaced openings 17 which are provided in stem 12.
lVth the construction set forth, it Will be seen, that an attachment is provided for a vehicle control pedal which may be readily and expeditiously attached or detached, and which may be adjusted to any length desired.
vWhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as nevv and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An extension attachment for vehicle control pedals comprising a body adapted to embrace the vehicle pedal and project outwardly therefrom; and a spring pressed pin slidably mounted in said body adapted for releasable engagement with an opening in said pedal to lock said parts together', substantially as described.
2. An extension attachment for vehicle control pedals comprising a body adapted to embrace the y'fehicle pedal and project outwardly therefrom; a spring pressed pin slidably mounted in said body adapted for releasablc engagement with an opening in said pedal to lock said parts together; and a grip adapted for manual engagement to retract said pin, substantially as described.
3. An extension attachment for vehicle control pedals comprising a body having side portions provided with slots adapted for snug engagement with the head of the vehicle pedal; and a spring pressed pin slidably mounted in said body adapted for releasable engagement with an opening in said pedal head to lock said body thereto, substantially as described.
4. An extension attachment for vehicle control pedals comprising a body having side portions provided with slots adapted for snug engagement with the head of the vehicle pedal; a pair of spaced parallel spring pressed pins slidably mounted in said body and adapted for releasable engagement with openings in said pedal head to lock said body thereto; and a yoke connecting said pins adapted for manual engagement to retract the same, substantially as described.
5. An extension attachment for Vehicle control pedals comprising a body having side portions provided with slots adapted for snug engagement with the head of the vehiclepedal; a. pair of spaced parallel spring pressed pins slidably mounted in said body andl adapted for releasable engagement with openings inv said pedal head to lock said body thereto; a yoke connecting said pins adapted for manual engagement to retract the same; and a supplemental pedal having a stem adjustably mounted in said body, substantially as described'.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
