G. H, ANDREAS.
SASH LOCK. 7 APPLICATION FILED MAR. H, 1915.
Patented Aug. 7, 1917.
arr @FIQ GEORGE H. ANDREAS, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
SASH-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 7, 1917.
Application filed March 11, 1915. Serial No. 13,716.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. ANpREAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sash locks, and has for its primary object to hold the upper and lower sash in a locked position when they are either closed or open.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sash lock that is comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Still another object is a device of this character which can be readily applied or detached from any ordinary windowsash.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain features of construction, and combination of parts, hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a portion of an upper and lower sash, the latter raised slightly and held in a locked position,
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the locking device detached from the sash,
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a plate member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the lower sash and mounted upon its upper edge adjacent the upper sash 2 is a bracket member 3, held in position by any suitable fastening means, preferably screws. Counter sunk in the sash 2, and adjacent the sash l, is a plate 4 held in position by any suitable means, this plate having a plurality of openings 5 intermediate its ends for the purpose hereinafter described.
Formed integral with the bracket are upturned ears 6 having two openings 6 centrally located. A thumb screw 7, capable of longitudinal reciprocation Within said openings, is adapted to project into the openings 5 of the plate 4, when in alinement, thereby locking the upper and lower sash.
Mounted or cast on one of the ears 6 is a plate or casting 8, one edge of which proj sets into the thread of the thumb screw 7, as shown at 9, thereby causing longitudinal movement of the thumb screw when rotated.
Mounted upon the thumb screw intermediate its ends is a lug 10, held in position by any suitable means. The object of this lug 10 is to limit the longitudinal movement of the thumb screw by engaging with the inner face of one of the ears 6, as shown in Fig. 2.
In the operation of this device with both windows in a closed position, the plate 4 is so placed that one of the openings 5 will be in alinement with the openings 6 in the bracket, then if it is desired to lock the sash in that position, the thumb screw 7, which has the lug 10 secured intermediate its ends, is moved longitudinally until the lug 10 engages the surface of one of the ears 6, and at the same time, the inner end of the thumb screw enters the lowermost opening in the plate 4, and thereby looking or preventing any movement.
When it is desired to raise sash 1 and lower sash 2, a short distance, it is done so until one of the openings in the plate 4 is in alinement with the openings in the bracket, and rotate the thumb screw as before, then the window is in a locked position.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I have produced a simple and inexpensive device, adapted to attain the results described, it being understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a sash fastener adapted for holding the sashes of a window locked in open positions, a plate having a series of spaced circular openings therethrough arranged in vertical alinement, said plate being secured in a depression in one sash, a bracket of substantially U-shape when viewed in section, said bracket being secured to the upper edge of the lower sash, and having spaced arms provided with coaxial openings having smooth bores, a thumb screw freely movable through said openings, a flat plate fixed to the inner face of the inner arm of said plate and having a projecting edge engaging in the threads of said thumb screw whereby the latter will be moved reciprocally with respect to said bracket upon opposite rotation being In testimony whereof I aflix my signature imparted thereto, and a 111g projecting from in presence of two witnesses.
the thumb screw to limit the amplitude of GEORGE H. ANDREAS. reciprocation thereof by contact with the Witnesses:
5 edge of said plate and with the faces of said THEo. HECHLER,
arms. HENRY A. SWEENY.
