PIN-TICKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- I Patented Aug. 7, 1917.
Application filed January 21, 1916. Serial No. 73,465.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUs'rAr A. WALLIN, a citizen of the Uni-ted States, and resident of Scotch Plains, county of Union, State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Pin-Tickets, of which the following description, in connection with the accom! panying drawlng, 1s a specification, l1ke,
thereof and when applied maybe provided with a sealing device which cannot be removed without the mutilation or practical destruction of the sealing device.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a pin ticket which cannot be removed from the article without destruction so that it may be applied to goods which may be sent out upon approval, it being the custom of merchants to refuse to credit returned articles if they show indications of use which would readily be observed by the removal or mutilation of the ticket.
A security ticket of this general character is disclosed in Patent No. 1,054,927
that a security'ticket of this character be applied to the face of the article at a distance from the edge thereof and the present invention is intended to supply this need.
This is accomplished by providing a card having a fastening member preferably in the form of a staple adapted to be thrust through the article to be marked or a portion thereof, the staple also being thrust through'an independent sealing device and its prongs turned down upon the face thereof, the sealing device being provided with a flap adapted to be folded over the bent down prongs of the staple and secured closely against them by a permanent locking means such as one or more eyelets located in proximity to the staples.
When the staple is thus secured the ticket cannot be removed without the mutilation or practical destruction of the sealing device.
A preferred embodiment of the invention.
is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which, v
Figure 1 is a view of the face of the ticket showing the same applied to the. side of a.
piece of fabric or other article,
Fig. 2 1s a view of the opposite side of the fabric showing the sealing member in eX-' tended position and illustrating dotted lines the position of the exposed ticket which bears the identifying marks in dotted lines, I
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the sealing member locked by a pair of eyelets, and, Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a ticket and the sealing member and the article towhich it is attached The marking device illustrated herein comprises a card 1 adapted to bear identifi- 'cation marks, price marks, etc, having a I penetrating member which preferably is in the form of astaple Qaffixed to the card adjacent to the edge thereof having its so prongs 3, 4, provided with perfect conoidal points, passing through-the card and an inj termediate portion 5ybent overthe edge of the card to retain the prongs'ofthe staple substantially at right angles-to the reverse face of the card as is usual in the well known Empire form of ticket.
It will however be understood that the manner of attachment of the penetrating device to the card is immaterial so far as the present invention is concerned.
The sealing member preferably is in the form of a strip of thin material such as paper, cardboard, celluloid or a non-corrodible metal preferably having a trans verse line or crease 6 dividing the strip into two flaps 7 and 8 adapted to be folded about the transverse crease 6 so that the flaps may be closely superposed. I I
One of the members 8 of the sealing member preferably is provided with'apertures 9, 10 adapted to receive the prongs of the staple but if the .material of which the strip is'made is easilypenetrable theseapertures may be omitted. The flaps 7 and 8 desir ably are provided with apertures 11 and 12 disposed symmetrically in respect to the transverse crease so that when the flap 7 is folded down upon the flap .8 the apertures 11 Y The flaps may then be secured together per.- ma nently by locking members 13 whichconveniently may] be in the form of eyelets, rivets or like devices having flanges 1'41, 15 adapted to be pressed against the outer sides of the flaps 7 and 8 to increase the stiffness of'the flaps as Well as,to-,form a positive means for preventing the separation'of said flaps.
In use, the card 1 is first placed against the outer side of the fabric A or other article tobe marked and the prongs 3 and 4 thrust through the article, the sealing meniher is then pressed over the extended'p'rongs,
the prongs '3, 4 of the staple 2 passing through the apertures 9, 10, of the, flap Si if such apertures be provided orthrust through the body of'the same and turned down firmly against the face of said sealing member; The flap Tisthehfolded down upon the flap 8 and the eyelets 13 inserted through the superposed apertures 11 and 12 and clenched draxval of the staple Without mutilating or e Pr cti ally' j tr-W ngt seal sm m erl While,- the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated herein shows two cooperating flaps lt 'W1ll be obvious that a "greaterfnumber of flaps maybe used and also that the locking [members may be disposedin diiferentrela tion to the staple than illustrated herein.
It will also be understood that different ki gm an be pr vided'w th'in h spirit and scope ofthefollowin g claims Copies of this patentmay be obtained for Having thus described my invention What I claim as. newand desire to secure by Let,- ters Patent is; v
1. A marking device for fabrics and the like comprising a card having a staple adapted to be thrust through the article to be marked,;an independent sealing member comprising a penetrable portion through which the prongs of the staple may be thrust and bent doWn thereupon and a covering flap adapted to be folded ClOWIl upon the penetrable portion to cover the shanks of the staple and fastening means adapted positively to engage the superposed portions of the sealing member in proximity to said penetrating member and permanently to lock the same together, whereby the removal of the marking device Without mutilation of the sealing member is prevented.
2. A marking device for fabrics and like articles adaptechto be secured thereto at a distance from the edge comprising a card having a staple adapted to be thrust through the article to be marked and an independent sealing member transversely vcreased to present two flaps adapted to besuperposed, one of'said flaps being apertured adjacent to said crease to receive the pron 's of the staple and to permit the same to bent down thereupon, said .fla'ps being provided with x apertures adapted to be superposed in proximity to said staple whereby When said flaps are folded together and eyelets passed through said apertures the flaps are secured permanently together and removal of the marking device Without mutilation of the sealing member is prevented. i
In testimony 'whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
