LOCKING-FIXTURE FOR TRUNKS.
To all whom it may concern.'
A Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY lVHiiAiiY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, havelinvented new k"and useful Improvements in Lockingdiixtures for Trunks, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. which are a part of v,this specification.
`This invention relates to improvements in locking fixtures for trunks and more particula'rly to trunks of the wardrobe type which are usually provided with a drawer section having a plurality of drawers.
y In trunks of the wardrobe type one of the lwill injure or mar the face of the other vtrunk section and other parts against which they strike. This tra. .ole may be overcome lby providingy a look for cach drawer but it is not desirable to unlock a considerable number of looks to gain access to 'the differont drawers.
It is one of the objects of thc present iiivention to overcome the objectionable features mentioned and provide a locking fixture for trunks which is adapted to secure all of the drawers of a'trunk in a Very siniple manner by means of aY single lock and also tic the horizontal walls of the trunk together.
A further object of the invention is to provide a locking fixture for trunks which is of simple, strong and durable construction and is well adapted for the purpose desired.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved locking fixture for trunks and its parts and coinbinations as set forth in the claim, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Figure l is a front view of a Wardrobe trunk provided with the improved locking fixture, the Wardrobe section being swung to open position and partly broken away;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof taken lon line 2 2 of Fig. 1,;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. l;
to the side walls of thepsaid section.
Specification of Letters Patent. p .Patented July 3f., 1.9i?. .Application ined June 2i, isis.
Serial No. 775,006.
Fig. "i is a vertical sectional view thereof taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. (i is a fragnnentary view of a trunk provided4 with a modified forni of locking fixture; and
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view taken on line T T of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings the numeral l() indicates a wardrobe trunk. 1l the drawer seetion thereof and l2 the wardrobe 'section which is hinged to the drawer section and foi-uis the side or horizontally swinging door thereof. vided'horizontally` niediallv by a partition 13 to reinforce the trunk. Drawers 14 are slidably positioned'in the drawer section above and below this partition and are supported. with the exception of the drawer restingr on the partition, andthe 'lowerdrawer on angle iiou brackets l5 fastened 'Phe lower drawer is supported on the bottoni portion 16 of the trunk. l
ln order to lock all of the drawers by a single lock. a loch bar 1Q. is povideo which is adapted to have its lower ie'f.iiceo:end A18.
inserted in the slot lil of thc'projcctiug arm 20 which is secured to the bottom 'portion 1G of thi` trunk.
The lower end 21 of the reduced end portion 1S of' the bar is bent outwardly at right The drawer section is di-l angles to prevent the removal of the bar' from the arm exec )t when swim@r forwardl toward horizontal position and to tie the truuk ends together.
The forward portion of the arm 20 is spaced from the trunk bottom and the reduced end portion is of suflicient length to permit a short longitudinal play of the bar in the arm to provide for other connections now about to he explained.
A bracing arm 22 fastened to the front portion of the medial partition 13 projects outwardly therefrom and at its front portion is provided with forwardly and in- Wardly extending angular projections 23 and the medial portions of the bar 'are notched as indicated by the numeral 24 to permit the harto enter the transverse slot 25 formed by the angular projections when.
the bar is in-its lowermost vertical position.
The upperV end 17 of the lock bar'17 is bentinwardly at right -angles and is'provided with abolt opening 26 to receive the bolt 27 of the 'lock 2 8 'which ismounted in the'up rdrawer. i
The ent end 17 Aisadapted to extend into the bar space ofthe lock llate 29 and the i ent end passes througha bolt opening 30 in the late and `fin 'a registering recess in the tru r section.
The ook bar is also provided with a key "opening 31 registering with the keyhole of the lock to permit thefinsertion of the key in the lock and with a ring handle' 32 for' convenience in handling the bar.
From the foregoing description it will be 'seen that all of the drawers are locked by theone lockers-acting withthe bar and that the operation of'nnl'ocking all of the drawers is a very sini 'leone and also that the trunk ends of th tied together.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the trunk is .also provided with'an upper cover 33y and the medial partition 13 drawer sectionv are firmly is placednearer the upper end of the trunk and forms the bottom portion of a compartment 34 which is provided with a front wall 35 and a hinged top cover 36. The lock bar in this form terminates at a point adjacent .to the medial partition and its upper bent end 17 is Yadfapted to swing beneathjtlie lrgdiali partition and be engaged by the springbolt 37 which is fastened to the front wail.. flhe lower reduced end portion 18 of this. bar is somewhat-shorter than the bar pf the ther form as the bracing arm is niitted and it is, therefore, not necessary to provide for the longitudinal movement-of the bar. tends upwardly to a point adjacent to the hinged top cover 36 Yso that when the said' cover is unlocked access may be had to the chain to unlatch the lock bar and permit the drawers' 14 of this form to be opened.
A chain 38 fastened to the bolt ex- Figs. 6 4and 7 show a modified form of brace arm in which the notches of the lock bar are omitted and the brace arm 22 is rovided with a side slot 25 into which the lock bar is 'swung to prevent lateral movement thereof. i l
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the locking fixture is of very simple construction and iswell adapted to perform the function desired.
l What I claim as my invention is:
The combination with a trunk having a plurality of drawers, of a locking fixture therefor, comprising a projecting slotted arm connected to the lower portion of the trunk,- a looking means located'at the upper end portion of the trunk, a bracing arni projecting from a medial portion of the' 4the medial portion of the bar being notched to permit the said portion to enter the space between the projections and the bar to be locked to said bracing arm.
, 'In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
