DAVID HARTWELL BRAZIL, OF MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO WILLIAM PORTER SANIDVJICH, OF MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.
CUT-OFF VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J uly 31, 1917.
' Application filed July 26, 1916. Serial No. 111,460.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID HARTWELL BRAZIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cut-Off Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to dispensing cans, and more especially to rotary cut-off nozzles which are vented; and the object of the same is to produce a nozzle or spout of this character rotatably mounted within the nipple of a can or other container, carrying its own vent, and bodily and quickly removable so that the can may be filled. The following specification sets forth several embodiments of the idea, in one of which devices are provided for preventing the rotation of the seat as the base plate of the spout turns thereover. In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of what might be called my preferred form, Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the seat plate, and Fig. at is a top plan view of a portion of the can body and the whole of its nipple, with the detachable members removed.
Throughout the Various views the can body B is shown as having an opening in its top, and to the latter is secured the usual nipple N which is herein illustrated as threaded. The cap is designated by the letter C and herein shown as screwing onto the nipple N, and the pouring spout is lettered S. No novelty is claimed for the parts thus far described.
In the type of my invention shown in the views (and in which the nipple is upstruck from the top of the can body instead of being soldered thereto, although this detail is unimportant) the open upper end or mouth of the nipple is bent inward and corrugated as at 9, and the same gasket and cap are employed as above described. The downturned inner end of the spout S is secured upon a disk or plate 41 around an opening 43 therein. The seat consists of a disk or base plate 45 of a size to fit rotatably within the cap and with its edge 3 resting upon the gasket 2, its wall 4 being bent upward and inward into a flange 4C2 overlying the washer 40, and both this plate and its washer are provided with a pouring opening 46 and a vent opening 47 as best seen in Fig. 8. Rigidly depending from the plate around the vent opening is a vent tube 44:, preferably of a length to extend completely through the nipple and into the body of the can. Depending rigidly from the plate 45 near its edge is a flange 48 which is of a size to pass into the upper end of the nipple, and this flange also is corrugated to fit the corrugations 9 of the nipple when the parts are assembled. The operation is the same as above described, and the turning of the spout moves its plate 41 over the washer so as to throw the holes into or out of register as desired. Meanwhile the corrugations in the flange 18 which are in constant engagement with the corrugated nipple present a rotary movement of the seat within the nipple. In this case the rotary member is pressed down onto the seat to the extent that the cap is tightened on the nipple. The parts are of the desired size and shape, proportions, and materials, and modifications are possible within the scope of the claims below.
What I claim is:
1. A dispensing container having a threaded discharge nipple with an inturned flange on its upper end, the edge of which is corrugated, a disk overlapping said flange and having a pouring aperture and a vent opening, said disk having a depending flange corrugated to interlock with the corrugated edge of the flange, packing surrounding the flange and clamped between the disk and flange, a plate above the disk having a pouring nozzle and a vent opening to register with respective openings in said disk, packing between said plate and disk and secured to the latter, and a flanged screw cap for engaging the nipple and turnably securing the nozzle plate in position.
2. A dispensing container having a threaded discharge nipple with an inturned flange on its upper end, the edge of which is corrugated, a disk overlapping said flange and having a pouring aperture and a vent opening, said disk having a depending flange corrugated t0 interlock with the corrugated edge of the flange, packing surrounding the flange and clamped between disk having an inturned bead clenching the the disk and flange, a plate above the disk edge of the packing thereon. 10 having a pouring nozzle and a vent opening In testimony whereof I aflix my signature to register with respective openings in said in presence of two witnesses.
disk, packing between said plate and disk DAVID HARTWELL BRAZIL. and secured to the latter, and a flanged screw Witnesses:
cap for engaging the nipple and turnably HORACE H001), Jr.,
securing the nozzle plate in position, said Grmnnns JOHN FAY.
