' JOSEPH SOBANSKI, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
cLo'riiEs-MAneLE.
Application filed May 10, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SoBANsxI, a citizen of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Mangles, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clothes mangles.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a mangle for smoothing and ironing clothing or other fabric in the moistened state, the device being likewise serviceable as a wringer for pressing the water from recently washed garments.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mangle that is easily operable, the same having f'oldable supporting members rendering the device of great utility and service in the treatment of washed fabrics, a regulating means being provided for al tering at will the degree of pressure exerted upon the goods treated by the device. A still further object of the invention is to provide a mangle that is easy and inexpensive to manufacture but which possesses great strength and durability, an advantageous regulatable pressure supplying mechanism being arranged for the moisture extracting elements of the device.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is an end view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken upon line IV-IV of Fig. 5, and,
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail sectional views taken upon lines IVIV and VV respectively, of Fig. 4.
The present device designed for extracting moisture from fabrics preferably without the employment of heat, broadly consists of a frame 10 having four supporting legs 11 with opposite roller mounting uprights 12 arranged at the top thereof, normally horizontal folding shelves or leaves 13 being hinged to opposite rods 14 carried thereby, a main roller 15 being journaled between the said posts 12 while a pair of auxiliary rollers 16 are shiftably carried thereby.
A table top consisting of two separated sections 17 are secured between the rods 14: be neath the said rollers, the said sections hav- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing an opening 18 therebetween and lying in the same normal horizontal plane as the leaves 13 when the latter are in their open position. Side struts 19 connect the posts 12 with the rod 1 1 and cut-away end portions or notches 20 are provided in each leaf 13 for permitting the upward and in ward swinging movement of the leaves to their inclined closed positions in contact with the struts 19.
The aforementioned auxiliary rollers 16 are journaled upon stub shafts 21 carried by opposite end plates slidably mounted upon the inner faces of the posts 12 by suitable dovetail connections 23 whereby it will be evident that the vertical sliding movement of the plate 22 will bring the auxiliary rollers 16 into and out of contact with the main roller 15, it being understood that all of the rollers are formed of suitable material for pressing and smoothing the fabric such as rubber composition or wood.
Levers 2st are pivoted as at 25 to lugs 26 upon the table sections 17 adjacent opposite ends of the device, the said levers depending through the opening 18 and provided with heads 27 at their upper ends arranged with toothed segments 28 in constant mesh with toothed portions or racks 29 provided upon the inner faces of the plates 22.
A power shaft 36 is journaled through the posts 12 adjacent their upper ends, being provided with a balance wheel 37 upon one outwardly projecting end thereof while an oper ating turn crank 38 is secured to its opposite end. A gear 39 is secured to the axle 40 of the main roller 15 in constant mesh with a relatively smaller idler pinion 41 mounted upon the adjacent posts 12 while a gear 12 also carried in j ournaled relations upon the same post 12 of the aforementioned gears and of lesser diameter than either of the same is secured upon the shaft 36 and is in constant mesh with the idler gear 41.
The operation of the device will be apparent from this detailed description thereof, it being understood that by turning the crank 38 in either desired direction, the main roller 15 will be revolved while the article operated upon being positioned between the main roller and the auxiliary roller 16, the same will be pressed therebetween for the extraction of moisture as well as for smooth ing the article, a suitable weight 82 being operatively carried by the levers 2 1 in the manner heretofore noted. A serviceable device is arranged for operating upon cloth in which the pressure thereon is readily adusted while the device possesses great strength and the rollers thereof insure the goods against being torn or mutilated during the operation of the device.
hat I claim as new is 1. A mangle comprising a frame, table top sections horizontally carried by said frame having an opening therebetween, end posts carried by the frame adjacent the said openings, a main roller journaled between the said posts, plates vertically slidably mounted upon the said posts, auxiliary roll- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ers journaled between the said plates adapted for normal engagement with the said main roller, levers extending through the said opening pivoted adjacent their upper ends upon the said table top sections adjacent the opposite ends of the device, toothed segments carried by the rear upper ends'of said levers in operative engagement with the said plates, and an operating weight attached to the lower ends of said levers.
2. A mangle comprising a frame, table top sections horizontally carried by said frame having an opening th'erebetween, end posts carried by the frame adjacent the said openings, a main roller journaled between the said posts, plates vertically slidably mounted upon the said posts, auxiliary rollers journaled between the said plates adapted for normal engagement with the said main roller, levers extending through the said opening pivoted adjacent their upper ends upon the said table top sections adjacent the opposite ends of the device, toothed segments carried by the rear upper ends of said levers in operative engagement with the said plates, an operating weight attached to the lower ends of said levers, a horizontal brace carried by said frame having a central ring therein, links pivoted to the lower ends of said levers, a mounting eye pivoted to the lower free ends of said lmks, and a weight detachably carried by the said eye.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOSEPH SOBANSKI.
