Description
R. B. KENT.
. VINDEX SHEET Music CABINET.
APPLICATION FILED MARJ'IG. 1915.
Patented July 17, 1917.
REESE B. KENT, OF PARKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
INDEX SHEET-MUSIC CABINET.
Application led March 16, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, REESE B. KENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of Wood and State of fest Virginia, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Index Sheet- Music Cabinets, of which the following is a speciiication.
The invention relates to cabinets, and more particularly to the class of sheet `music cabinets.
The invention contemplates the use of a cabinet divided into a series of indexed compartments for holding removable, boX- shaped slides or containers of peculiar configuration and adapted especially for the reception of sheet music.
The primary object of the invention is to provide these containers for this particular purpose, and to adapt them for close fit in the cabinet and for firmly yet removably holding any number of sheets of music up to capacity, without tearing the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a cabinet of this character which is extremely simple in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in'view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying d rawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet showing the front ldoors open with the containers in the respective compartments therein, several sheets of music being held within each of said compartments;
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the music sheet containers.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the cabinet comprises a body 5 supported by means of legs 6 at the desired elevation above the foundation or iioor and has hinged to its side walls at the front thereof Aswinging doors 7 adapted to close the open :front of the cabinet.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ldump the contained sheets of music.
Patented July 17, 1917.
Serial No. 14,857.
Arranged within the body 5 are superposed horizontally-disposed shelves 8 and 9 respectively forming compartments 10 adapted to receive music books, folios, or the like, while above the shelf 9 are partitions 1l forming upper and lower rows of upright compartments 12 kfor receiving the containers or holders for the sheet music hereinafter fully described.
Each container or' holder is a boX-like slide A comprising vertical side walls 13 which are substantially rectangular except Where they are cut away at their front upper corners at 13, and a flat bottom 14- and back 15, the bottom 11 at its front edge carrying a flexible pull tab 16, the said slide A being of a size corresponding to the compartment 12, so as to slidably lit therein, and in this slide A is adapted to be received a plurality of sheets of music.
Attention is directed to the fact that only the corner is cut away as at 13, leaving each side wall with a considerable upper edge 15 which slides under the shelf 9 or the top 5 of the cabinet, as seen in Fig. 2, and therefore when the container is drawn partly outward, as seen in Fig. 1, the fiat upper edges 15 guide it in its movement, prevent it from binding, and finally prevent it from tilting forward out of place so as to accidentally Yet this specific construction of container leaves it open 'at the top and front as well as at the cut-away corner, with the result that it can be readily cleaned at any time and music sheets may be inserted and removed without mutilating their edges, and when in place their corners may be bent down so as to eX- pose the title, as will be seen in Fig. 1-thus enabling the user to select a piece of music and to draw it from the opening without taking out any other sheet.
Mounted within each slide A is a resilient clamping frame 17 which serves to hold the sheet music in vertical stacked relation within the slide, the frame being made preferably from wire. This frame is in effect a spring finger whose tip bears yieldingly against the interior of one wall and whose base is secured to the interior of the opposite wall near the back 15, as best seen in Fig. 3; but the tip of the finger (or the frame as shown) should never project so far forward as to overlap the cutaway corner 13. The tendency of this tip is ever to press the stack of sheet music against one side Wall, and as all the fingers or frames are mounted on the corresponding sides of the several containers and bear the music sheets toward the other sides, the stacks of sheets in each roW of containers Will be spaced from each other as long as the containers are `not completely filled. front edges or' the shelves 9 and 9 are suitable indicia, such as letters forming an index to guide a person in determining the l0- cation of a particular piece'of sheet music contained Within any one of the holders Within the cabinet.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device Will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is v:-
yThe combination With -a cabinet having a Copies of this patent may be obtained for On the series oi' upright compartments open at the front; of a series of sheet music containers slidably mounted in said compartments and each comprising a box-like slide having substantially rectangular spaced side walls with their front upper corners cut away, and a flat bottom leaving the front of the slide open, a fiat back leaving the top of the slide open, said Walls having each a straight upper edge of considerable length; and a resilient member secured at its base within one -side Wall near said back and with its tip bearing normally toward the opposite side Wall in rear of its cut-away edge.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D. C.
