To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXIs MARGHAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Douglas and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the class of can openers, and more specifically to that class of can openers wherein the cutting member is adjustable so as to provide for use in connection with cans of different diameters.

The device shown herein is similar to the one upon which I have secured protection by Letters Patent No. 1,012,880, issued December 26, 1911.

An object of this invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein the cutting and guiding members are constructed of one sheet of material, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture to a minimum.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like 01 corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my invention,

In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of my device which consists of a bar having its forward end upturned as shown at 2 and its rear end reduced and bent to form a handle 3. While I have shown the bar squared in the drawings it is apparent that it can be made in other shapes as occasion may demand.

The cutting, guiding and lifting members are all stamped from one sheet of material, this sheet comprising a body portion 4 which has its ends bent upwardly, as shown at 5 and provided with squared openings 6 for the reception of the squared bar 1. Formed Specification of Letters Patent.

upon one end of the body portion 4 is a substantially V-shaped member 7 which is provided with a diagonally extending cut ting edge 8, and a guide member which is bent as shown at 9 to bring the portion 10 in a difierent vertical plane than that in which the cutting member is disposed. By this arrangement it is obvious that the portion 10 of the guide member can engage the outer side of the can, while the cutting member will engage near the edge of the top thereof and being ahead of the cutter instead of back thereof it obviates the defect in the former opener whereby the guide would bind on account of its wrong position.

The other end of the body portion 4 is provided with an outwardly turned lip 11 which is adapted to serve at certain times as a bottle opener. By having the cutting, guiding and lifting members all formed from a single piece of material it is apparent that the cost of production of a device of this nature is reduced to a minimum.

In the operation of my invention the prong 12 which is carried upon the upturned end 2 of the bar 1 is ammed into the center of the top of the can and the 'bar moved into a position parallel with the top of the can, whereby the cutting member can be pushed into place and the guide member disposed in position. The opener then can be manipulated through the medium of the handle 3 to any position desired by the operator.

In Fig. 3 I have illustrated a modified form of cutting, guiding and lifting member, this comprlsing means whereby the members can be inserted upon the bar after the handle 3 has been formed and greatly facilitates the removal and attachment of these members if the same should become broken in any way. In this form the body portion 4 is cut away, as shown at 13, whereby the squared openings 6 are directly connected together and the bar can be easily inserted into place. A cap 14 is provided which has its under sides upturned and sharpened as shown at 15, the upturned sides being adapted to engage in the upturned ends of the body portion 4, while a portion 16 of the cover extends beyond one of the ends of the body portion in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 3.

While both of the forms illustrated above have proven very advantageous in practical use, I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to either and that I may use either form Without departing from the spirit of my invention, provided such form juxtaposed ends being split centrally With Qg gies of this patent may be obtained for respect to the center of the adjacent open- 15 ing forming a forked projection, one portion of the said forked projection having its edge disposed at an angle and sharpened for forming a cutting blade, the other portion of the said forked projection being bent 2Q inwardly toward the opposite of the said ends to form a guide and having its terminal disposed in a plane laterally spaced from the plane of the said cutting blade.
