Specification of Letters Patent.
E Patented July re, teat.
Application filedAugust 2, 1916. Serial No. 112,678. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM PnN'rE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Figure Toys, of
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a posed uponthe right front of the doll (Fig.
part of this specification.
My invention relates to toys, more particularly to that clam of toys constructed of paper or cardboard. Specifically, I am concerned with so-called paper dolls and itis the object of my invention to provide an improved structure comprising the doll itself and one or more garments therefor, all constructed of paper or cardboard, and so arranged that the doll may be double faced that is, pictured on both sides, while the garment not only extends entirely around the doll but opens and closes like the garment of which the toy is a miniature. it thus provide a dressed doll which is complete upon both sides, and in which the removable garment may be applied in a new and improved way to the end of greater attractiveness in appearance and greater interest to children. I shall now describe in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of the present specification, one embodiment of my invention in order to apprise those skilled in the art how to construct and practice my invention.
Figure 1 is a view of one side of the doll; d Flig. 2 is a view of the reverse side of the Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 4 is a developed view of the paper garment; and
Fig. 5-is a view showing the gent applied to the doll.
As illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the doll is composed of a piece of paper or cardboard folded back upon itself in order to form the two face portions 66 having the base portions '7 ihis structure is cut out to simulate the doll and is pictured on both sides, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Each side 1s provided with a slot 8, for a purpose to be pointed out presently.
Referring to Fig. 4,' it will be seen that the garment comprises the back portion 9, the left front portion 10 and the right front portion 11, stamped from an integral sheet of cardboard or paper, and folded upon the lines 12-12. The left front portion 10 is provided with the tab 13 and the right front portion 11 is provided with the tab 14 and the slot 15. 'In applying the garment to the doll, the right front portion 11 is first dis- 5) with the tab 14 extending into the slot 8 in the front side of the doll, as illustrated in dotted line in Fig. 5. The back portion and the left front portion are then together swung around the line 12 in back of the doll into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and then the left front portion 10 is swung about the line 12, in front ofthe doll, as shown in full line in Fig. 5, the tab 13 being inserted in the slot 15 on the opposite'side of the garment, as clearly shown. The doll itself may, if desired, be made of a single piece, pictured on both sides, or it may be made with any kind of a base so that the doll may stand, it being understood that for the purpose of this invention any kind of doll, within the limits prescribed by the claims, to which the garment illustrated in Fig. 4 may be applied, being intended.
It will be readily seen that difierent Ends of garments may be applied to the doll. For instance, if the garment opens in front the back portion is made in one piece and-the front portion in two pieces, as is the case in the specific illustration. 0n the other hand,
if the garment opens in back, the front ismade of a single portion, and the back is made of two portions, overlapping with the tab on .one side extending into a slot on the other, as has been described.
garment completely encircling said fi.
and means to connect one of the end parts to said body to retain the garment on the ho y.
2. In combination, a flat body having the pictorial representation of a figure thereon, a garment to encircle the body formed in three sections folded, two of which sections overlap, one of last mentioned sections having a slot and the other a tab for insertion thereinto, and means to connect the inner of said sections to said body.
3. In combination, a flat body member with a pictorial representation of a figure thereon and having a slot therein, and a garment folded in three parts, one part being a front portion, another part being the completing front portion and the remaining part being the complete back portion, one of said front portions having a slot therein and a2 tab thereon, and the other front portion having a tab thereon, said garment fitting about said figure. f
4. In combination, a flat body member with a pictorial representation of a figure thereon and having a slot therein, and a garment comprising a back vportion and a ment adapted to completely encircle said figure and comprising a back and two front portions, one of the front portions having a formed thereon to fit into one of the slots in said body, and the opposite portion of said garment having a tab fitting into the slot in the opposite portion of the garment to maintain the garment on said body. I
6. In a figure toy, the combination of a fiat body member folded to provide two layers having a figure representation on each exposed surface thereof, said layers having slots therein, a garment to encircle the body being composed of a back portion and two half front portions adapted to lie upon the body in overlapping relation, and means to relatively connect the front portions and to secure one of the same to the body.
7. In a figure toy, the combination of a flat body member folded to provide two layers having a figure representation on each exposed surface thereof, said layers having slots therein, a garment to encircle the body having a back portion and two half front portions adapted to lie upon the body in overlapping relation, the innermost front portion having a slot therein and a tab there on, the latter to engage in one of the slots in one of the layers of said body, and the outer front portion having a tab to engage in the slot in first said front portion.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 29th day of July, A. D. 1916.
